Dawg's pals mourn his loss:

Kooky and Gracie

Owner had to put her dog Mauja down last Saturday. She didn't think her other animals were missing her, and then this happened. Kooky and Gracie have never slept together before, but there they were last night, sleeping in Mauja's crate.

Just so there won't be any confusion.

And, as far as I know, nothing has happened to the DU'er named Dawgs either.

Do they understand death? Maybe. Do they fear it? Probably not.

They do understand changes in their pack/family. They modify their behavior in the face of those changes.

Emotionally, I don't think my dogs will miss me as much as I will miss them...but in their own ways they might and that is part of the magic of the relationships.

Thanks for the post, agg.

was severely depressed after my grandfather died. He basically just payed around moping for 2 months until he finally caught pneumonia and died. He was, until that time, a very healthy and active seven year old Airedale.

But they are killed and hunted for food. It is a known fact that elephants mourn for their dead families and friends.

5lb yorkie brother - but when PeeWee died - Sport took to sleeping on PeeWee's spot on the sofa.

He never bothered with it before.

And of course PeeWee never minded being ignored - he followed Sport like a shadow.

Of course they miss their sibling.
They're family.

get upset about it. I have always made a point of letting living animal companions see one that has died and sniff it so they have closure. Once they know their friend has passed, they go on with their lives. I feel that dog and kitty are concerned and waiting for Mauja to come home.

as he left for work every morning.

On the morning Pop died, the dog sat pretty much on the property line, watching first; the paramedics and firemen, and then friends and family who stopped by to offer support.

He spent about five hours there, just sitting. The dog disappeared that afternoon, and was found a few days later...lying dead in a field of tall grass behind our house.

I believe it was more than a coincidence. I think he was missing his human buddy.

Of course they miss her. Animals have feelings too, maybe not like humans, but feelings nonetheless. Mauja was a beautiful dog.

Wish I knew how to post pictures here (I'm really bad at technology) because I have more pictorial evidence--recent, alas--of this.

RIP Mauja
