Hat's off to the younger generation in the South

I was leaving a supermarket in Florida wearing my PFLAG Mom shirt. A 20 something female employee called and ran after me. She said, in a very heavy Southern Drawl, that she was a PLFAG Sister and wanted to know if I knew what the next Fundraising Event would be and when.

Oh, you go, girl. I sincerely hope that your parents are on board also and support their gay child too. Is there really a divide between North and South, or maybe it is more of a divide between the younger generation and the older generation? Florida barely passed that Amendment in 2008 to ban Marriage Equality, Civil Unions, Domestic Partnerships, or anything but the union of one man and one woman. Would it pass in 2013? I doubt it because more young people have come of age since then.

Anyway, I wanted to give kudos to the younger generation, in particular the Southern ones.

From anywhere, really.

I live in a conservative area where many of my teenage son's friends call themselves "Republicans" because that's what their parents are. However, a real examination of the issues reveals a generation of kids who:
1. support reproductive choice
2. support marriage equality and gay rights
3. support gun control
4. support women's rights
5. support higher taxes to pay for better schools, roads, health care and college tuition

and a whole host of other issues.

In 5 - 10 years, either they will become Democrats or the Republican party will have to change to accommodate their moderate views.

I'm OK with either path to a saner society.

I had many gay friends and co-workers there and did not even give their sexual orientation a second thought. They were what they were.
