U.S. millennials have socialist leanings, love technology

The millennial generation in the U.S. believes that bigger government is better for the economy. Yet despite socialist leanings, this generation loves technology products, the fruits of a capitalistic society, according to a new survey.

Spanish telecom company Telefonica (TEF) and the Financial Times surveyed 1,000 millennials — people ages 18 to 30 — in the U.S. as part of a global survey of Millennials, also known as Generation Y. The total survey polled more than 12,000 millennials in 27 countries. The results of Telefonica's Global Millennial Survey, billed as the largest of its kind, were released Tuesday.

Half (50%) of U.S. millennials think there should be more government regulation on the private sector to drive economic growth, as opposed to less regulation. And 60% think public sector job growth should be made a priority, as opposed to the private sector, Telefonica reported. By contrast, on a global basis, the largest percentage (51%) thinks private sector job growth should be the priority.

In the U.S., 64% of millennials believe the government restricts, influences or censors the media. Worldwide the figure is 66%, with countries like China (86%), Turkey (80%) and South Korea (80%) topping the list.

I also read somewhere that they are more likely to stand up for what they believe is right despite the consequences of doing so.

Good on them.

Ed Snowden is just 2 years younger than I am.

I think one of the reason he's become so popular is that many of us identify with him.

He's one of us!
