James Gandolfini

Last edited Tue Jun 25, 2013, 10:43 AM - Edit history (1)

An actor with ONE memorable roll showered with accolades, flags at half-staff, and a Governor fawning over his stardom.

I never even liked the Sopranos, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

(and the pikers can't see the flag for the flag pole. How refreshing of you folks)

May he rest in peace, but I know there are a lot more famous and deserving people out there who didn't get this kind of attention when they died.

What's going to happen when Springsteen dies, shut the state of NJ down for a month?

Have a great day. If you can stay in the air conditioning.

There is a large group of individuals who respect the on-point artistry of James Gandolfini. He is most known for the Soprano role but he has done many other character roles that were spot-on. He is also a good soul, philanthropist.

He made an inpact....I feel the loss myself.

True Romance

Money for Nothing

Crimson Tide

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

A Civil Action

The Last Castle

All the King's Men

Plus a whole slew of stage work.

Etc.

Just shhh. Someone's always more deserving than someone else, but it's pretty damned petty to point it out before the body has cooled.

Besides, you're wrong about "one memorable role."

You may not remember. I do. And I never saw one episode of The Sopranos. Not one.

his work and attention given to veterans:

http://www.stripes.com/news/us/gandolfini-covered-veterans-issues-in-hbo-documentaries-1.226709

snip

The first documentary, “Alive Day Memories: Home from Iraq,” was made in 2007 after the actor visited Iraq and the Walter Reed National Medical Military Center.

In it, Gandolfini sits down in a New York studio with 10 Iraq vets and gets them to open up about their war experience, and in some cases, their ongoing recovery.

On the documentary’s website Gandolfini said one of the reasons he did the project was to provide a platform for veterans to be heard.

“[Veterans have] been through so much, and I guess they feel like no one is listening, and no one cares,” he said.

The director's cut if you can get it. Small role, but incredible. Brad Pitt has a hilarious bit part, too.

Tarantino wrote the script.

The guy was the face behind one of the most iconic characters in television.

By all accounts, he seemed like a decent enough guy (unlike his TV persona that he crafted so well.)

NJ wants to honor him? Fine with me. Not like they are honoring a serial killer or anything like that.

Personally, I've never watched an episode of The Sopranos or seen him in anything else. I guess I'm unAmerican or something for not being charmed by the culture of gangsters.

My brother earned two bronze stars and a purple Heart in Viet Nam and all he got was a hole in the ground.

Don't tell me this man earned the flag flown at half staff because his body of work 'earned' him that honor.

Bullshit

Have a nice day.

Celebrities will always command much of the public's attention. It's the nature of the beast.

That being said, it doesn't diminish the good things that ordinary people do in their ordinary lives just because it might not get the same publicity.

I'm sure many people came to praise your brother after he passed. I'm guessing he received a military funeral, which from what I've heard is a beautiful, touching ceremony that not everyone has the opportunity to receive.

That his death might not have received the same attention in the headlines as a celebrity's death is not in any way a disservice to him and his life's work.

Our lives are not meant as a contest for people to fawn over after you're gone.

So a celebrity got honored after he died. Big deal. What's that got to do with anything in how you go about your own life?

Or his roles in films (IMDB can clue you in there).

Yeah! Just tell everyone how they're assholes for wanting to give a decent human with a resume that is far greater than your awareness an iota of rispetto.

What you don't know CAN hurt you...

Gandolfini was a thespian that many other people truly appreciated, and whom those people wish to honor .. Why would you wish to interject your misanthropic pique into their expressions of grief and loss?

Some people are just mean ass people ... Count yourself among them ....

But now that you mention it: My favorite roll?

Cinnamon, of course ....

This is about lowering the flag to half-mast, not your fawning over an actor who won't be remembered in 100 years.
