(38,437 posts)Opposing the resolution was Vice-Chair of the PA Democratic Party, Penny Gerber.
"This bill as it currently stands says it is a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing, but it specifies that the moratorium will last until the practice can be done safely. Because no set period of time is provided it truly is a ban on fracking, and this is a thriving industry. It is for that reason I cannot support this bill," she said.
It goes on to criticize Gerber for not falling in line with a fracking ban.

(5,378 posts)Apparently moratoriums are fine for the wealthy counties but the rest of the state is a sacrifice zone.

(38,437 posts)This is simply a smear on her for opposing the legislation.

(5,378 posts)The part where it points out that she is a consultant to several big gas interests?

(5,957 posts)IMO, we have have the technology to do it safely. Many, especially on DU, will never agree it can be done safely. As drafted, the bill has no objective standard and is useless except as a means for fracking opponents to stand in its way.
Exactly.
We should be rallying for tough, enforceable regulations to ensure the safe and clean execution of this useful technology.

(5,378 posts)The gas companies tells us that one inch of concrete is "safe enough" to protect our aquifers from casing failure. They tell us that the frack ponds built right next to a creek in a flood plain are safe. They tell that the chemicals used in the procedure are safe, yet, they won't tell us what is in them.

(127 posts)Over time, the ring of cement around the well casing is damaged by deformation (caused by tectonic and seismic movements and subsidence owing to oilfield operations) and by chemical decomposition. Formation fluids usually corrode both the cement and casing, generating additional paths for future migration of gas and fluids by breaking down the intended cement seal. The breakdown of the cement can open paths for the flow of gas and liquid behind the casing. Corrosion also results in casing leaks (holes)
Any holes in the casing and the surrounding cement sheath in the annular space between the casing and the wellbore, within the calculated zone of escape, will result in gas leaking out of the wellbore and then toward the surface.

(127 posts)She left her post as DEP secretary in July of 2008. By 2009 she became an operating partner with Element Partners. Former Governor Rendell became an operating partner at Element in 2011.
In January 2011 Element Partners announced the formation of Agility Fuel Systems, Inc. (Agility, or the Company) through the merger of FAB Industries and Enviromech Industries, two leading providers of alternative fuel systems for commercial trucks, buses and specialty vehicles. Agility engineers, manufactures, installs, and services on-vehicle fueling systems, with a focus on compressed and liquid natural gas fuels.
As DEP Secretary, McGinty appointed Kathryn Klaber to the Air Quality Technical Advisory Committee (AQTAC).
Yes, the same Kathryn Klaber who is now the Executive Director for the Marcellus Shale Coalition. Klaber was reconfirmed by McGintys successor, John Hanger, and as of Feb 2013, Klaber is still listed as an AQTAC member.
