Well, how's that FREE MARKET helping American workers? I thought the FREE MARKET was better than...gasp! UNIONS! WORKPLACE REGULATIONS!...because business owners have workers' interests in mind enough for those big government bureaucrats to f___ off, right? Not for this supermarket worker:
In her complaint, she says that she presented her superiors with three separate doctors notes explaining her high-risk pregnancy and asking that her job duties be restricted, the Huffington Posts Dave Jamieson reports. Her role as merchandise manager involves loading and unloading pallets of heavy goods, climbing ladders, and moving pallet jacks carrying hundreds of pounds of product. She told her store manager that she has a history of pre-term delivery, but her requests to be shifted to lighter duty at the deli counter or in customer service were denied, her complaint states. She kept working because she couldnt afford to lose the income and health insurance.
One day last November, she asked to leave work while in pain, but her request was denied and she continued her heavy lifting duties. She went into labor that night and rushed to the hospital. There she was informed that her baby was losing fluid and sustaining brain damage. She gave birth two days later, but the baby only lived for a few minutes.
According to the suit, Jamieson writes, Baby Jades death over those several minutes was the most painful thing Ms. García had ever experienced.
But those red states like Texas want to shut down Planned Parenthood...where are the bills to shut down businesses like Wal Mart and Albertson's that treat pregnant workers like this? I hope Texas State Sen. Wendy Davis introduces such a bill!
Despite this story I haven't heard about PRO LIFE activists boycotting Albertson's or Wal Mart (the TP story linked also relays a similar incident at Wal Mart.)

(1,406 posts)I guess common sense is not to common at Albertsons. Pregnant woman and heay lifting usually do not go together, let alone one with health issues. Good point about no boycott.

(27 posts)Had that happened in Alabama, Bubbah the boss would have said, "hell woman, back in the good old days our slaves would deliver a bastard child and be back in the field, picking cotton the same day. You're lucky to have a job."
Technically, we don't call it slavery anymore but...............

(809 posts)Sad to say.
It sometimes helps to turn a tragedy into something that will help others avoid the same pain.
Good luck to you, Ms Garcia.

(75,480 posts)years since they closed the store I once shopped in. I remember back twelve years ago or so when they went on strike and I had to shop at Ralph's so as not to cross the picket line there.

(6,785 posts)I've seen grown men, construction workers, that could just barely move them without much of a load. If they aren't properly maintenanced, they're hell to drag around even when unloaded.
It would take a real shithead to demand a pregnant woman haul one around.
I hope she wins a judgement large enough to hurt them.
