Has anyone else seen the new WalMart commercial where the WalMart guy is showing the slightly overweight African American woman how she can save money if her family eliminates just one fast food meal a week and replaces it with Walmart food? And he tells her "And they include bacon!" And she cheers.
Is it just me or is this kind of offensive?

(16,993 posts)...because I keep thinking about that $900,000/year per store figure that the American people subsidize Walmart's employees because they aren't paid a living wage.
Corporate welfare, and Walmart is one of the worst.

(3,724 posts)Several other people in this thread have echoed my comments, so perhaps you should reconsider your adorable little face palm thingy.

(39,191 posts)Most of us here understand the horrific impact WalMart has on the communities their stores are in and how their employees are so desperately underpaid they must depend on food stamps and medicaid for help.
You sit need to wake up and smell the bacon....

(56,582 posts)If they're trying to get hipsters to go to Wal~Mart (opening smaller stores in urban areas, organic/local produce, etc.) it makes sense.

(3,186 posts)But if I could pinpoint what bothers me the most, it would probably be the assumption on the male character's part that (the generic) anyone is 'eating fast food once a week'. If some random guy came up to me matter-of-factly declaring that, I'd be asking him if he was mistaking me for someone else that he knew...
Seriously, I'd be so confused!
Also, the whole thing just feels condescending somehow.

(7,429 posts)The same spokesman in each of them tries to make people feel stupid. Did you know you could save money here instead of going to another store?? Really idiot?? I price shop before I buy. I clip coupons. Oh and WalMart lies about the coupons, too. They say they take other store coupons, but this is not true at all. Oh and I buy the items at Publix (let's say) when they are on sale. And much cheaper than they could ever be at WalMart.
Has anyone seen the commercial where this guy brings WalMart steaks to a fancy restaurant. And no-one realizes it's a cheaper cut of beef?? Yeah right. We bought meat from WalMart and Sam's and both cannot compare to Publix or even Winn Dixie. WalMart steaks have no flavor. So, when I see that commercial I knew it was a staged fraud!!

(529 posts)There's no way that one's not staged. Of course they're not going to show ppl!s negative reactions and who's going to give a bad review of something when they're on the spot in front of a camera?

(20,317 posts)I think it would actually make me want to try the product more. Honesty in advertising is something we don't even consider possible anymore, after decades worth of ever-slicker pitches. A 13 year old these days watches television ads with more skepticism than a 70 year old would have done in 1965.
If there's anything at all that has actually been sharpened in the western mind over the last few decades, it's the ability to sense advertising.

(529 posts)Everything wal-mart does is offensive. But yeah, those commercials suck. All of them. It's like "see we're good to poor ppl 'cause we have cheap crap, (just don't ask us to pay our employees a living wage or give them good benefits)."

(20,317 posts)I know that sounds stupid, but calling bacon a fad seemed even more asinine, so I deleted it. :/
I'm sure you've seen the t-shirts praising the transcendent perfection of bacon, or seen some of the mountains of internet humor on the subject.
It's dumb, and also, get off my lawn.
