Sarasota man sentenced to 14 years for killing dog

The Sarasota man caught on surveillance video beating a friend's dog to death with a tire iron for 10 minutes was adjudicated guilty by the judge in court today.

Kevin Koscielniak, 52, pleaded no contest to the six charges against him and will now spend 14 years in prison and five years on probation. He will also be prohibited from any contact with the family of the dog he killed.

“This was a senseless act of violence indicative of a depraved mind,” said Art Jackman, the lead assistant state attorney in the case, after court concluded.

John Olaya, 43, had known Koscielniak for three years, letting him pick up and sell scrap from his shop, John's Automotive on Snug Harbor Place in Sarasota. The first sign of trouble happened on April 27, when Olaya noticed Koscielniak intoxicated, stumbling back and forth in the auto shop's yard.

now they need to give just as serious sentences to people who attack other people with such violence.

and beat a woman and be out in 7 years or less. I'm not saying this man doesn't deserve the sentence that was handed him. Just pointing out that even dogs are held in higher regard than women by some.

4. Yes, it's good he's going away for 14 years. That was almost like beating a child to death. As far

people getting away with rape, 7 years is pretty good, but not good enough.

I don't know if this country always had so many troglodytes who defind rapist so much. More likely never charged, so they didn't get defended by friends and families. Or communities in some cases.

Do you remember the cat story here on DU, comparing the compassion for animals being higher than women?

The world has serious problem when people refuse to admit to the humanity of others for whatever reason, profit, fear, fun or just hatred of 'others.' That women, who are half the population, seem to fall under the 'other' group seems to say that humanity is insane.

5. Isn't that the truth. I'm very glad this monster got a sentence more commensurate with his crime

than most animal killer/torturers do, though. I mean, it was actually as much as they're calling for for that guy who chalked anti-bank slogans on the sidewalk!

Obviously we have a long, long way to go.

Women's bodies are only special when we're baking a bun, according to some people. Nevermind the violence seething from the rape.

Kevin Koscielniak was sentenced to 14 years in prison for ruthlessly beating a friend's dog to death with a tire iron.

A Florida sicko has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for beating a shop owner's beloved dog to death with a tire iron.

Kevin Koscielniak, 52, pleaded no contest to the charges including animal cruelty and armed burglary in Sarasota court Wednesday, the local Herald-Tribune newspaper reported.

The walls and ceiling of John's Automotive on Snug Harbor Place were spattered with blood after Koscielniak broke into the shop on April 27 and bludgeoned owner John Olaya's mastiff, Ashton, to death.

The brute sold scrap metal he collected at the shop, but had been kicked off the property earlier in the day for showing up drunk, the newspaper reported.

The 4-year-old pup's battered remains were later found buried on an adjacent property. A bloody blanket was discovered in Koscielniak's truck.

The article pulls no punches. I hope he serves his entire time, by which time he will be 66 years old. Guess we'll be paying his sorry ass after that, but it'll be cheaper than prison. Just think what he would have done to a child or any other living being to get his way.

For 14 years. That's longer that a lot of sentences for peoplw who kill other people.

Sounds like the Florida criminal justice system. That's a scary place.
