"Uh Oh … Ecuador Throws Snowden Under Bus"

Josh Marshall- July 1, 2013, 8:15 PM

snip***

The government of Ecuador had already been distancing itself from Edward Snowden’s cause. But now the country’s President, Rafael Correa, has gone as far as to say that his government never intended to facilitate Snowden’s journey from Hong Kong to Moscow. He now says his consul in London, apparently in league with Assange, was freelancing. This comes after Snowden released a statement thanking the Ecuadorean government for making his flight (in both sense of the word possible).

According to this interview with The Guardian, Correa says that the decision to issue Snowden a temporary travel pass was done by the country’s consul in London Fidel Narvaez, under whose protection Julian Assange is now staying, without authorization. He also seems to suggest that Assange was acting in concert with Narvaez to make this happen.

snip***

Correa added his government had not, and would not, give Snowden an authorised travel document to extract himself from the airport. “The right of asylum request is one thing but helping someone travel from one country to another — Ecuador has never done this. ”

Is this what has Snowden so full of Ignorant Whining from Moscow?

He calls it 'fighting for freedom' to stir the emotions and maybe get Greenwald some contributions, and then he goes peddling his wares to the Chinese and Russians.

Though Putin gave him an open message when he said stop making Washington angry. He was telling Snowden to shut up and get back underground.

I think Russia and Ecuador hadn't planned on Snowden breaking to the surface again, so now they're doing their best song-and-dance. I mean, they had him well hid. Nobody knew where he was. I think whatever they're saying now, it's because Snowden is unwisely not staying out of sight and out of mind. I mean, just Friday, Obama was saying Snowden was no big issue. I thought the government, at least the politicians, wanted him forgotten as an embarrassment.

But I knew there was trouble Saturday when his father spoke to the press about negotiating with US government about his son's terms for surrender. He made demands like no gag order. Not a good move, and it shows he doesn't understand how poor his hand is dealing with the US government.

I admire what the guy did, but he's ill-equipped emotionally for major international intrigue, no doubt about it.
