EU outraged over U.S. surveillance program
BRUSSELS -- Allegations that the U.S. government wiretapped U.S.-based embassies and U.N. missions of various countries have sparked outrage, most prominently among its EU allies.
The British newspaper The Guardian reported on June 30 that the U.S. National Security Agency's surveillance programs targeted 38 diplomatic missions.
U.S. President Barack Obama stated July 1 that it would provide the EU, which has demanded a full explanation, with all the necessary information. Secretary of State John Kerry, meanwhile, remarked that "it is not unusual for a lot of nations" to collect information on other countries to protect their national security.
According to The Guardian, targets of U.S. surveillance included the embassies in Washington D.C. and the missions at the U.N. Headquarters in New York of countries including Japan, the EU, South Korea, India, Mexico, Turkey, France, Italy and various Middle Eastern states.
