Mitt Romney’s Michigan ad shows him driving a car that was made in Canada

Mitt Romney’s Michigan ad shows him driving a car that was made in Canada
Wed, Feb 15, 2012 12:52 PM EST
The next big prize in the GOP primaries is Michigan, one of Mitt Romney’s five home states (along with MA, NH, UT, and CA). He’s released an ad showing him driving around in a fancy Chrysler while he talks about how much he loves Michigan, and all. Here’s the ad:

&feature=player_embedded

And here’s the problem: that Chrysler that he’s driving is a 300 model, and the 300 is made in Canada.

How do we know? Here’s a screenshot from the ad – the key is the dashboard layout in the lower right hand corner.

Compare that interior layout to that of two Chrysler models – the 200, which is made in the U.S., and the 300, which is made in Canada

The biggest giveaway is the air vents, which are tall and skinny in the 300, but are sort of square-shaped in the 200. You can see that the 300 is an exact match for what Romney is driving; the 200 is not.

There's plenty else to criticize Romney for, he's not worth disparaging our neighbors to the north.

might it not matter to you that the guy who's trying to get your votes is driving a car that wasn't made in this country?

What about our neighbors to the South? If analysis showed it was made in Mexico, would you say the same thing?

Trust me, it's not going to help him here. If he can't find a made-in-Michigan/US car for his ad, especially after saying that GM needed to die, well, he can kiss a lot of votes goodbye.

The ad wants to make him look like an ordinary guy who drives to work or to the store. Romney doesn't commute to work because he doesn't have a real job and I'll bet the family is chauffeured from one mansion to the other..

As if that paints him as the "every man"!

I went to the Detroit Auto Show with my father too. We stood in line for tickets and fought our way through the weekend crowds, because my father worked weekdays and we couldn't just cruise in before it was closed to the public Like Some People did.

Someone should tear this guy a new one on this alone.

Clearly they (the campaign) is so confident that they no longer attend to any details. Perhaps that is too strong of a statement as it suggests that at some point they cared or attended to details.

How dare he try to claim an affinity with the automakers and auto workers of Michigan? He tried to put them all out of work. That ad just calls attention to his hypocrisy.

I would figure that Romney would be a shoo-in to win Michigan, because he's the scion of the Romney dynasty there. Of course, that also brings baggage--Michiganders know exactly how elite he is.

Nonetheless, if someone born and raised in Michigan cannot seal the deal there, how can he actually beat Obama, someone who saved the US auto industry?

this is the car his dad put into production. this model won the car of the year.

we had 1963 with a 327 4 barrel with a three on the tree with overdrive. the only car that beat me was a 327 chevy.

It takes more man hours to build the parts of a car than it takes to assemble them. What's really more important is what's the foreign vs domestic content of a vehicle. I don't know of any vehicles that are 100% domestic regardless of where they are assembled.
