Actress in Pete Hoekstra's Super Bowl ad says taking role was mistake

The Asian-American actress who played a role in a controversial campaign ad said it was “absolutely a mistake” to take the role, which was criticized as portraying cultural stereotypes.

“I am deeply sorry for any pain that the character I portrayed brought to my communities,” Lisa Chan, a 21-year-old woman who lives in the San Francisco area, said in a message on her Facebook page today.

Former U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, a Holland Republican running for the U.S. Senate, had commissioned the ad for his campaign and aired it during the Super Bowl in Michigan.

In her Facebook post, Chan wrote, “As a recent college grad who has spent time working to improve communities and empower those without a voice, this role is not in any way representative of who I am. It was absolutely a mistake on my part and one that, over time, I hope can be forgiven. ...................(more)

I played bluegrass at a campaign event for Mitch McConnell one time, too, and I took the money (which was pretty good back then -- he was running for Jeffers County (Ky) Judge-Executive, and we quoted a really good - for us - price). But I didn't do any stereotypes like, oh, sitting on a hay bale or chewing on a piece of straw, or speaking in redneck English.
