(1,374 posts)Ameruican history. Actually it lasted a long time after the war. We are so ignorant of our own history.

(4,507 posts)the saddest period in American history. It's had such far reaching consequences, and it always struck me as a moment when the country could look to the horizon and see something better, but instead, it just turned around.
Now Reconstruction had plenty of problems, and certainly there was corruption (but it's not like they freaking invented corruption or were the last of it, as nutbags would have you believe!), but the slow loss of national will and the restoration of the bigots is beyond depressing.
I blame Andrew Johnson more than anyone, although there's a lot of blame to go around. But that man was a shitty President - possibly the shittiest of them all.

(36,974 posts)You have the option in the right bottom corner of the OP to click on the self-delete link and then repost in the Video forum - but there is nothing wrong with having the video in the GD forum.
Hope that helps
p.s. It would be nice if you were to edit the OP though and give us a clue about what the video is in regards to.

(159 posts)......I watched quite a bit of it and could not help but think of our predator class and their embracing of China's system of human repression as a tool for profit....it certainly is a forboding video in light of the recent proposal to purchase the majority of U.S. prisons by the same human mindset for profit.....African-Americans certainly understand slavery, Caucasians have been slow on the up-take wrt indentured servitude.....I recommend it....

(28,784 posts)based upon the book, "Slavery By Another Name."
It is REALLY important for Americans to watch this video to understand how African-Americans were forced back into slavery by state laws, enacted in the deep south, to keep African-Americans in slavery.
It was profitable for the agricultural south and prison labor was, and is, a profitable enterprise for racists.
We continue to have a system of prison-slavery that's called the War on Cannabis - it's called the war on drugs, but it's really a war on African-Americans and Latinos.
This doc. covers the time from the immediate end to slavery to continued human rights abuses - including murder - into the 20th c. All justified and encoded into law by racists.
This doc isn't for the squeamish. If history bothers you - if you don't want to see the women who were lynched or men burned to death for being a black person in the south - some of this will disturb you.
All of it should disturb you.
