Okla. Senate OKs gives 'personhood' to embryos

http://www.sacbee.com/2012/02/15/4267241/okla-senate-oks-gives-personhood.html

The Oklahoma Senate has overwhelmingly approved an anti-abortion "personhood" bill that declares life begins at conception.

The vote Wednesday upset doctors who fear the proposed law will jeopardize reproductive medicine.

The bill now heads to the House, where it is expected to pass. Republican Gov. Mary Fallin typically won't comment on pending legislation, but she has described herself as strongly "pro-life."

(snip)
The bill is opposed by the Oklahoma State Medical Association, because of concerns it could affect reproductive medicine and ban certain forms of birth control.

Let's be accurate here. 1. LIFE DOES begin at conception. 2. SENTIENT, VIABLE LIFE does not. WinkyDink Feb 2012 #16
Exactly. "Life" is defined in different ways, needs to be "sentient viable life". thank you. uppityperson Feb 2012 #18
Does this mean that if a woman works after conception, she can get double pay? Uncle Joe Feb 2012 #19
No. It means she has to register, be monitored throughout her pregnancy to make sure she does uppityperson Feb 2012 #20

personhood concept.

Embryos are cells. They are not viable.

So they won't turn it over to the voters, like in Mississippi (or was it Alabama?), where the ultra-conservative voters slammed that down, so they're going to do it legislatively in ultra-conservative Oklahoma.

Forcing women to get ultrasounds, passing state laws that will make it impossible for women to get what is a LEGAL procedure (according to the laws of our nation), making it difficult to get contraception.

I'm fired up and ready to go!!!!! It's time to get some liberals in office EVERYWHERE!

No 'jelly on the belly' technology here. Nope - it's intra-vaginal ultrasound.

It's pro-poverty, anti-woman, anti-medicine, anti-health, anti-doctor, and anti-education.

These people have to be stopped or they will put us all back in the dark ages.

These "personhood" bills specifically forbid termination even to save the life of the mother. When an ectopic pregnancy is diagnosed, it is usually because the fallopian tube has extended to the point of extreme pain. At that point there is no time to evacuate to another state to seek life-saving surgery. Death in 15 minutes after rupture.

According to American Family Physician (www.aafp.org): "A ruptured ectopic pregnancy is a true medical emergency. It is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the first trimester and accounts for 10 to 15 percent of all maternal deaths."

I am absolutely astounded at the callousness of legislators voting for this dangerous, murderous legislation. I can appreciate debate on the issue of a viable fertilized egg, but in the case of ectopic pregnancies, that fertilized egg is going to die one way or the other -- the question is whether or not the mother will die with it.

I've posted on this subject before -- since I had an ectopic pregnancy in 1980 and survived due to the quick response of the hospital and doctors, I take this issue quite personally. I remember the fear I had at the time that they might not be quick enough to keep me alive. I dread to think of women in a similar situation where there is a LAW that condemns them to death without a trial or conviction.
