Oh, this has been so much fun discussing with my local FB friends tonight.... LOL

Security camera footage from a well-known gay bar has played a key role in a hit-and-run investigation of a former Houston City Councilman, who is now a conservative talk show host, Local 2 Investigates reported on Wednesday.
A Houston man reported to police that KTRH talk show host Michael Berry plowed his SUV into another car outside T.C.'s Show Baron Converse near Fairview in the Montrose area about 11 p.m. on January 31st.
Managers of the bar then turned over security camera video from inside the club to HPD investigators, and they write in an e-mail to Local 2 Investigates that their video confirms that Berry was in their establishment that night.
"If you're going to stand up and say anti-gay things and be conservative and be Mr. Good Guy, and then when something happens that points you out and puts you in a place with the exact business that you aim to shut down, it kind of makes it seem like I need this to go away and I need it to go away quickly," said Bennett.

(44,576 posts)The reporter replies that if Berry were to say yes, they'd have him, of course. But if he were to say no or refuse to answer, the investigation would be "right back where they started."
Huh? If he says no, all they have to do is ask him if he was in the club at the time. And if he refuses to answer, all they have to do is put together a timeline based on the club's surveillance tape and hope they have a bombproof eyewitness.
This is Prosecution 101. Unless Mr. Berry has called in a few favors -- and I DO mean "favors."

(9,600 posts)The police need to see his car immediately. Search warrant? match the paint or evidence from the scene of the hit and run against any damage to his vehicle.
DallasNE
(7,403 posts)What they are saying is that they can't place him behind the wheel because they only have one eye witness and that makes it he said/he said. I find that odd because there is a body of evidence available that all points to Berry. Granted, without the witness a designated driver could have been behind the wheel but the nature of the accident suggests the driver was drunk. DUI, hit and run -- nothing to see here. A few dollars to the school fund clears it all up.
UCmeNdc
(9,600 posts)So the police should be interested in who actually left the scene of an accident. If they place the car as the vehicle that left the scene then the car was involved in a crime. Then the question becomes who was driving and why did they leave the scene of the accident. It should be easy for the police to prove the vehicle caused the accident and left the scene.

(15,943 posts)Well looks as though he's getting help from the DA's office. HMMMMMM
HPD officers involved in the investigation said that the Harris County District Attorney's office has declined to file criminal hit and run charges in the case, telling officers that no one can positively identify Berry being behind the wheel for the crime.
rocktivity
(44,576 posts)The least HPD can do is ASK the guy if he was driving his car that night, especially since there's proof he was actually on the premises. Plus they've got an eyewitness, so all they have to do is put together a timeline. If there's no question that the car was his, they've GOT to follow through on it!

(640 posts)vehemently anti-gay conservatives are actually homosexuals or bisexuals themselves. It's pretty sad that these people are so ashamed of who they are that they need to hurt not only themselves but others through their words and, in these cases, actual political decisions.

(10,533 posts)Let us please not lapse into this bogus cop-out of an argument that if you're a public homophobe it must be because you're secretly gay. It really doesn't help. Yes, we love it when homophobic hypocrites are exposed but this does not mean that all homophobes are closet cases. Most are just hateful assholes who are, yes, heterosexual. Claiming that all homophobes are secretly gay is simply another way to blame the minority for their own persecution and let the majority off the hook.

(4,198 posts)In fact I think the lack of generalization (generally), the ability to think in nuanced fashion, admitance that there may be valid points to be made by many even if those many disagree, to be a strength of the progressive worldview generally.

(1,412 posts)We are not being "indifferent" to the hateful messages he spews out on his radio program. I don't feel bad about Shaming him, he needs that, exposing the hypocrisy of this closeted right winger. Beside that, leaving the scene of an accident? D.A doesn't have enough info to charge him. If I was involved in a accident and left the scene, cops would be busing my door down.
What's going on? Was he at the gay bar collecting information to use in a documentary about guy's in drag? yea, right.

(8,053 posts)if I moved to Houston, Tx and back up a street 70 ft and hit a parked car and then I speed away from the scene--leave the scene of an accident--after the owner of the car I just hit runs over to me and looks me in my face that I can enjoy not being harassed about it by the HPD? Is that what HPD is really saying here? They're not going to pursue a clear case of hit and run/leaving the scene of an accident, even though there are laws on the books regarding that?
I mean, when did the laws of the state of TX bend to allow a criminal act to go unaddressed, let alone unpunished? WTF is that about? So this guy just has to whistle in the wind over the damage done to his car because dude is a conservative radio talk show host and the DA is a punk who is afraid to do his/her job?

(70,508 posts).... I have found the more people complain about "the gay" the more likely
that they are attracted to gay sex.
I have found a very simple solution to the big "gay problem" and that is I
don't have sex w/ other men but I love my gay and lesbian friends and it will
not be a question of if there will be gay marriage but when will it be the law
of the land.

But Houston was hit hard by AIDS. We lost some dear friends. But we also know some of the longest living HIV/AIDS patients. Some are not patients anymore. That is wonderful.

(51,559 posts)Michael Berry did the voice-over on his doctored video that was flying around right wing e-mail chains claiming to show how President Obama wouldn't let Sal Guinta's family sit in the front row at the recent award ceremony of Congressional Medal of Honor Ceremony, but rather put Dem politicos there:
http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=hxlcVAEj0sM&vq=large
I Googled it and sure enough, I found it was a hoax, as documented thoroughly on:
http://michilines.wordpress.com/category/michael-berry-sal-giunta-hoax/
The actual white house video shows the parents did in fact sit in the front row:
When I replied to my relatives with the real video of the ceremony, thus demonstrating that Michael Berry was a lying sack of crap, they had no response. Just like they will have no response (nor care) about this. All they want is for someone to be bashing Obama, and they don't care who's doing it. That's why the IOKIYAR rule continues on.

I've learned through exposure that in order to be a republican, you have to lie to yourself. I've tried, in a friendly way, to point this out to repubs. I wonder if any of them ever got it or if they just despise me more for having brought it up.
When I was a tiny Catholic tyke, I learned something, a quote that was attributed to Jesus. It stayed with me my whole life, it just felt so correct. It is:
"The greatest fool in the world is a man who would lie to himself."

(135,060 posts)Michael Berry: Time to Revisit Firehouse Saloon Incident?
By John Nova LomaxThu., Feb. 16 2012 at 12:31 PM
Alleged TC's Incident not Berry's first wee-hours bar parking lot fiasco.
The alleged TC's Show Bar incident that came to light today would not be conservative talker Michael Berry's first late-night bar parking lot misadventure.
On December 22, 2007, just as his term on City Council was coming to a close thanks to term limits, Berry attended a concert by his friend Cory Morrow at the Firehouse Saloon on Fountainview at the Southwest Freeway.
Berry would later say that as he was leaving the tavern, at 1 a.m. on December 23, he was carjacked at knifepoint in the parking lot. He told the Houston Chronicle that he got in his Chevy Tahoe, put down his Blackberry and stuck the keys in the ignition, when suddenly his passenger-side door flew open and a Hispanic man with a knife jumped in the car.
Berry said that as he was trying to shield himself from the first attacker, a second man, also Hispanic and packing a blade, jumped in the back seat.
