Arizona is one step closer to funding an armed, volunteer militia to patrol the Arizona-Mexico border for undocumented immigrants and drug traffickers.

The Senate Appropriations Committee on Tuesday narrowly passed a revised version of Senate Bill 1083, which would create and fund an Arizona Special Missions Unit.

If the bill passed, the unit would help secure the border and help local law enforcement pursue, detain and arrest those involved in "cross-border criminal activity," according to the bill's language

This is basically a "possee" and by funding it, the state becomes responsible for what they do. This can go bad a couple of ways, and one is obviously a way in which the state ends up in a huge lawsuit. Strangely, the other is the formation of a new bureaucracy, which supposedly should piss off the wing nuts.

we already have corrupt border protrol officers... now you want to get an volunteer militia (possible armed civilians) to shot at 'will' at anything that moves... we do like to follow Texas footsteps... this isn't the 'wild west days' shoot first and call the sheriff / coroners office

gov. Scott Walker flew in last week to kick off a more comprehensive union busing drive than his litttle trial baloon in WI. The AZ bill would destroy even the police and firefighters union.

Such a terrific idea, embodying all the best aspects of the United States as currently, er, constituted. No pun intended.
