NEWSFLASH: “Fetal Personhood” Law Passes Oklahoma Senate

http://msmagazine.com/blog/blog/2012/02/16/newsflash-fetal-personhood-law-passes-oklahoma-senate/

A bill declaring a fertilized egg to be a “person” with constitutional rights has passed the Oklahoma Senate. The bill is expected to pass the Republican-controlled House and be signed into law by the state’s anti-abortion governor, Mary Fallin.

Personhood laws would drastically limit women’s medical options:

By giving constitutional rights to a fertilized egg, the amendment could ban emergency contraception, birth control pills and IUDs as well as all abortions, even in cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the woman or girl. It could eliminate medical choices for women, such as some cancer treatments or in vitro fertilization. It could allow the state to investigate and even prosecute a woman for a miscarriage.

Such measures have been unpopular with voters. A personhood measure on Mississippi’s November ballot suffered a resounding defeat. But personhood’s proponents are pressing on in 2012, with campaigns in 11 states and counting.

fund the legal challenges to this and the hundreds of people it will need to enforce it. Craziest, redest state in the union. I live next door and swore I'd never step foot in the state again after some of the crap they pulled last year.

Fertilized eggs are now more important to Republicans than womens' health. Will there be a political price to pay for these ridiculous laws? Stay tuned.

They are bold because they will stop you from voting in 2012 because of all their tricks. They can even stop you if you have a valid passport. In their eyes that can commit election fraud and nothing will ever happen to them. They believe they can do what ever they want in the states they control. And they will use the police on you if you protest.

Oklahoma is a completely nuts state but, I'm a college student so not like I'll be getting out of here anytime soon. Of course not everyone in Oklahoma is a wingnut but, many people are. How much more screwing by the GOP is it going to take to wake this state up? It seems like it will never wake up at times.

I know, slippery slope is a logical fallacy, but it is hard for me to see anything but further erosion of basic human rights and dignity in Oklahoma and other states. Women have been declared subservient to their fertilized eggs. Women in Oklahoma are now legally LESS VALUABLE than cells. What kind of sick, misogynistic, misanthropic garbage would DO such a thing? I don't think there will be any end to this kind of insanity any time soon, and it is going to get worse for ALL of us before it gets better.
