The Constitution bars ANY law respecting the establishment of a religion....

...and the Constitution is the supreme law of the land.

The Catholic church had it's turn being the supreme law of the land and might have done wonderful things but instead concentrated on burning to death Jews and heretics. THAT is what a war on religion looks like. Telling the church it must obey the supreme law of the land is mere enforcement of the rules.
