The terrible train derailment of crude oil in Quebec and the subsequent explosions and fire that completely destroyed much of the town center of Lac Megantic, will be used to justify and push the keystone xl pipeline. More and more crude oil is being transported by rail, and in fact, 2 pipelines have been cancelled in favor of rail transport, despite rail transport costing more.
The fact is that rail infrastructure in the Northeast where this happened is in terrible shape and an accident like this was predicted by multiple people in the field. (caveat: there is the possibility that this was sabotage)
Anyway, I have no doubt that within days The Wall Street Journal will run an editorial using this to push for the keystone pipeline and to push for the pipeline in the Northeast that would run through Northern Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

(114,904 posts)actually has a better safety record than pipelines, but that won't stop them from using this.

(17,087 posts)So far there is no evidence that the accident had anything to do with track maintenance. If I were a betting man, my money would be on human malfeasance. I think some jackass decoupled the cars with no idea of the potential consequences.
