White people who kill black people in 'Stand Your Ground' states are 354 per cent more likely to be found justified in their killing than a white person who kills another white person, according to research...
...The result was drawn from a study using FBI data conducted by John Roman, a senior analyst at Urban Institutes Justice Policy Center...He examined racial disparity using data on 43,500 homicides from 2005 to 2009 - the most recent years for which data was available, reported PBS.
He narrowed the sample to about 5,000 homicides by only analyzing killings in which there was a single shooter and a single victim, both of whom were strangers to each other...
Breakdown of the killings:
Breakdown of the killings: The figures represent the percentage likelihood that the deaths will be found justifiable compared to white-on-white killings
...Frontline then asked him to analyse the data and look for findings between states which had Stand Your Ground versus those without the laws...

(35,387 posts)With the caveat that the way it's cited makes it really hard to figure out what, if anything, the numbers mean.
I can do a regression with numbers that appear show horrible things must be true. But depending on the assumptions, process, and numbers involved they actually show absolutely nothing. Unless you know to look at the analysis, you got squat.
This appears to be based on thousands. It's based on under 510 examples, from up to 31 SYG states (with states switching SYG status mid year), over about 7 years, where the difference between SYG and non-SYG white-on-black numbers are less than a score.
Hard to know what the numbers mean, and that's for starters. Worth doing more analysis.
They also say they ignore case-related details. They assume that the facts of the case are roughly similar between them all. They also aren't clear whether the SYG defense was based on pre-trial hearings, made explicit, or consisted entirely in having the obligation to retreat struck from the law.
The Urban Institute advocates. Advocacy makes science and research policy-oriented and tries to exert power to accomplish change. As a general rule, the more you want power and to change things, the lower your standards for research. Money's a temptation, and we pan research for money. Power is also a temptation, often a greater one.

(39,171 posts)murder is primarily an intra-racial phenomena - whites kill whites, blacks kill blacks.
So you are comparing a large sample (white / white) against a very small one (white / black). Basic statistics tells you that small samples are more likely to produce extremes.
In Florida to date there have been 61 white on white SYG cases. There have been 11 white on black, 10 black on white and 26 black on black cases.
The results:
For white on white: 32 justified, 25 convicted, 4 pending
For white on black: 6 justified, 1 convicted, 4 pending
For black on white: 4 justified, 2 convicted, 4 pending
For black on black: 16 justified, 6 convicted, 4 pending
Just food for thought.

The numbers prove it.

(16,204 posts)The law allows a person at their place of business to not have to retreat (run away from store) if attacked. This was written specifically for convenience store owners who have to defend themselves against a robbery.
