(146,317 posts)elsewhere in the body...often in the leg, passes through the heart and is lodged in an artery in the lung. Unless the clot is detected before it moves, there's not much of a way to prevent this. One tip: Don't stay seated for hours at a time. Get up and walk around, like when you're on an transcontinental flights.
Such clots are most common in bedridden people.

(3,166 posts)Scariest thing I ever saw...She was coughing up blood, then she started gurliging...When EMT's came, she was basically unresponsive though she still had pulse...But as soon as she arrived to ER, heart stopped...She went right into asystole (flatline), most times V-Fib occurs first, then asystole....She was revived after 14.5 minutes, but by then severe brain damage resulted...Based on what MD's said, and knowing her wishes, she was removed from life support 4 days later....Came to find out she had a pulmonary infarction, which has a very high mortality rate...

(146,317 posts)My sympathy to you for having to go through that traumatic experience.

(3,166 posts)Yeah, it was unexpected, I had thought she was doing well health wise....She was a 20 yr cancer survivor, hell, she had a clear colonscopy 3 weeks prior to her death...But the morning she became sick, she had a look on her face like something was wrong, looked little scared...She just thought it was the medication she was taking for an infection found on an endoscopy (done same time as the colonscopy)...She became stricken with the PE later in the afternoon...She was 78....My dad died of a heart attack when he was 48 (this was back in 1980), so I've always had anxiety over health issues, esp heart...
I had a normal cardiac MRI last year, but as much as that test picks up of your heart and valves, I don't think it sees much on your lungs....

(4,238 posts)Scariest thing I've ever been through. Got a clot in my leg. Hurt like a mother fucker. Went to my useless doctor who misdiagnosed the blood clot (said I had an "inflamed vein" and that it would go away on its own.) After several days of being in massive pain, I started having trouble breathing, which FINALLY got me to visit the ER. The clot in my leg had traveled to my lungs.
Soooo.......if you ever have painful cramping in your leg (mine was in my calf area) DON'T ignore it like I did. Go to the ER right away. I dodged a bullet, but now know better.
RIP Dennis Farina, what a great actor.

(8,646 posts)the first was after surgery to amputate his leg due to a botched vein replacement surgery...he was in the hospital when that one happened so the second he became short of breath they figured it out. A few years later, he had one and survived. I'm not sure of what exactly happened, but there was a bit of a delay in treatment and he lost some lung tissue/function. He survived but was on oxygen for the remainder of his life (he was on oxygen for 20 years until his death at age 97).
There was a young woman in our town who was very involved with youth and was well known, and she died suddenly from a blood clot in her lungs. It can happen to anyone at anytime. Very unnerving.

(904 posts)multiple blood clots in her lungs at the age of 94! This started when she fell and broke her pelvis, then suffered a heart attack and pneumonia. After recovering she went to live in a nursing home and even with oxygen had trouble breathing. She was seen by her cardiologist who ordered a CT scan of her lungs and they couldn't believe all the blood clots she had. She was immediately rushed to the hosp. where fortunately she responded very well to blood thinner meds. She even recovered well enough to get off oxygen. Unfortunately she started to fail 2 years later and the Coumadin (blood thinner) she was on started to complicate everything. She went off the Coumadin and had a stent put in a main artery in her groin and had no further problems with blood clots. By that time she was in a very weakened state and passed peacefully at 96.
Sorry for your grandfather and for everyone who loses someone they love.

(4,238 posts)and was incredibly painful. I could kick myself for not going to the ER right away, but I didn't want to spend 7 hours in the waiting room, and when my dr. downplayed everything, I just thought whatever it was would just go away.
And yes, I have a desk job, so LOTS of sitting. Plus, after doing some testing, turns out I have a condition that makes me prone to clots (factor 5 leiden.) I now leave my office and walk around the building almost hourly, and take a baby aspirin daily.

(60,010 posts)had years of roles still left in him.
I often pick movies just for the character actors.
Farina was fun to watch, but I think mis-cast in Law and Order.

(10,611 posts)I loved his $300 Italian shirts and his 'nice ride'.
Sad. I would've like to see him in more roles.
