China deploys elite gaggle of geese police

“Among all poultry, geese [are known] for being extremely vigilant and having excellent hearing,” Zhang Quansheng, a police chief in Xinjiang’s Shawan county, told the newspaper.

The People’s Daily said the “sharp, keen and brave” animals were proving an invaluable tool in Xinjiang’s war on crime and were now being “actively promoted” across the region.

Law enforcement agents described the geese as a new “highlight of stability maintenance work” and said they had proved themselves “better than dogs” in tackling crime.

“Geese are very brave. They spread their wings and will attack any strangers entering [someone’s] home,” said Mr Zhang, the local police chief.

The birds were like “a radar that does not need power”, he added.

on their citrus farm to keep the snail population down. One gander was named Mean Max by my father, and would charge him and anyone else who approached. I was visiting one time, and Mean Max attacked me. My father said, "Watch out. That goose'll bite you." I said, "Watch this," and stood my ground. Mean Max ran up, flapping his wings and hissing. I didn't move. He got near me and took a swipe at me with his beak. I cuffed him on the head. Not hard, but just enough to deflect his bite. He backed up and charged again. Again, I cuffed him on the head as he tried to bite me.

He backed up and stopped. Then he walked over to me and just stood there. I told my dad to bring me a handful of grain, which he did. I held it down so the goose could see it, and it promptly started eating it out of my hand.

Mean Max never charged anybody again, but he'd come up to people and look up at them for food. I believe that I demonstrated that Mean Max was no longer the head goose in the flock, and he accepted that.
