(111,267 posts)The idea is the heir and a spare, just in case the heir isn't a great horseman or takes a lot of stupid chances and bumps himself off before he manages to get old enough to produce an official heir of his own.
Otherwise, they'll end up with another queen, something they'd like to avoid because the three they've had have lived so damn long.

(34,648 posts)The Hanover branch succeeded the Stuart branch as Monarchs ending with Victoria. Her son Edward ruled, the George who created House of Windsor. I believe some of the Stuart's were catholic and got cut out of succession.

(56,177 posts)I sort of recall something about the House of Windsor being created around WWI...makes you wonder how anyone can, in this day and age, still believe in the Divine Right of Kings.

(8,462 posts)He was married to Mary Stuart (the king's daughter) and was invited in by the Parliament. Queen Anne ruled after that, THEN the Hannovers were brought in. (Starting with George I)
You are right. I forgot about William and Mary. And Anne. Sadly I always forget the childless ones.

(101,320 posts)Philip was also awarded the Greek War Cross of Valour.[19] Duties of lesser glory included stoking the boilers of the troop transport ship RMS Empress of Russia.[22] He was promoted to sub-lieutenant after a series of courses at Portsmouth in which he gained the top grade in four out of five sections of the qualifying examination.[23] In June 1942, he was appointed to the V and W class destroyer and flotilla leader, HMS Wallace, which was involved in convoy escort tasks on the east coast of Britain, as well as the allied invasion of Sicily.[24] Promotion to lieutenant followed on 16 July 1942. In October of the same year he became first lieutenant of HMS Wallace, at 21 years old one of the youngest first lieutenants in the Royal Navy. During the invasion of Sicily, in July 1943, as second in command of HMS Wallace, he saved his ship from a night bomber attack. He devised a plan to launch a raft with smoke floats that successfully distracted the bombers allowing the ship to slip away unnoticed.[24] In 1944, he moved on to the new destroyer, HMS Whelp, where he saw service with the British Pacific Fleet in the 27th Destroyer Flotilla.[25][26] He was present in Tokyo Bay when the instrument of Japanese surrender was signed. In January 1946, Philip returned to the United Kingdom on the Whelp, and was posted as an instructor at HMS Royal Arthur, the Petty Officers' School in Corsham, Wiltshire.[27]
