For the love of a cat named Nikita:A message for cat-savvy people (part 4 continued from the Lounge)

Perhaps you have seen the threads I have been posting the last few weeks about a cat who adopted me. I have always owned dogs, and when I opened my door one day and found this beautiful little cat meowing at me, I in my naivety did not know what she wanted from me. "She wants food, but if you feed her, you will have a cat," my neighbors said. I looked back at her earnest face and emaciated body and asked of my neighbors, "What is the alternative?" I promptly left and went to the store to buy some cat food. And that was the start of a very, long arduous journey which is culminating with this thread today and the ensuing two to three weeks.

Here are the threads if you wish to review them, and here is a picture of the beautiful cat who I have named Nikita who climbed the steps to my doorway that day.

Thread 3 at http://www.democraticunderground.com/1018434376
Thread 2 at http://www.democraticunderground.com/1018337627
Thread 1 at http://www.democraticunderground.com/1018319954

If you have had the opportunity to follow her story, you know one of the enduring questions that arose as the story progressed was this: was she pregnant. In the meantime, some of my neighbors became upset that now a cat was hanging around in the neighborhood and upsetting the applecart. I persisted in my determination to help this cat with whom I developed a deep bond. I did a lot of research, and asked that DU'ers who had a lot of information and advice to answer my questions along the way. The overwhelming amount of support I received from our community of cat-savvy people is truly impressive. They donated their time and helped me progress in my journey with Nikita to a very positive end.

But then one day, Nikita left. I was devastated. I did not see her for 2 days. When she finally returned, I was shocked by her appearance. She had dropped an incredible amount of weight suddenly. So I knew she must have had a litter. People told me that cats often hide their litter for protection from predators and the elements. You can read what happened next in either Thread 2 or 3.

But I recently took the advice of what DU'ers pushed me to do, I had Nikita spayed, given all her shots, tested for HIV, ears cleaned, nails clipped. This was done at hospital in Laurel, Maryland. Today, Nikita is thriving and for the first time in her life has a name, an address, a permanent home, a human being that loves her and tons of DU'ers who have followed her story. She also has 5 kittens:

May I introduce from left to right:

Monet (so beautiful, white with patches of color so brilliant one thinks of a painting by Monet); my very first impression of her was the stunning look she carries seems simply to give her the appearance of a truly beautiful work of art;

Dane (front and center) gray with lighter thin gray stripes and beautiful blue eyes;

Sunny (behind Dane) so golden, so beautiful she lights up the space;

Elise (named from the enchanting Beethoven piece) because she too is enchanting, colored similarly to Monet, and she is "kissing"

Bo (to the right) strikingly black with a white stripe down his nose and white paws with some white also on the stomach area.

I call them collectively Nikita's kids.

Today I start a fund-raising appeal to ask those who have the ability and willingness to do so to help me get the same treatment for each of Nikita's kids that I was able to get for Nikita herself. This will not only be a great thing for their health, but it will further the adoption process. I had an opportunity to put these kittens in a colony, but I chose to keep them. I wanted to find them wonderful homes. So I should mention here if you have a place in your heart and your home to love one of Nikita's kittens, if you are anywhere near the DC metro area, I would love to hear from you.

Our own Animal Control facility is stacked to the hilt and cannot take in any more animals. But I wanted to take the responsibility for Nikita's kids in finding good homes for them.

I have already received some offers from a few DU'ers to help. My estimate was that I would need to raise $325 for the 5 kittens. That is based on the fact that Nikita's cost $65.00. I have been discussing this matter with SPAY NOW, an Animal Surgery Clinic in Laurel, Maryland. Here are the figures they quoted me:

Feral females cost $60 for exam, spay, FVRCP (distemper), rabies, deworming, and ear clean
Feral males cost $50 for exam, neuter, FVRCP (distemper), rabies, deworming, and ear clean

Tame females cost $65 for exam, spay, FVRCP (distemper), rabies, deworming, nail trim, and ear clean
Tame males cost $55 for exam, spay, FVRCP (distemper), rabies, deworming, nail trim, and ear clean

I want to take them all at the same time, so today I am officially asking if you are reading this thread and are willing to make a contribution, no matter how small, please respond to this thread or send me a private message. Because the rates are different for males and females, I am not sure what the final total will be. But I will keep everyone informed as to how much is collected and what the final bill will be.

There will be 3 ways to donate, so you can private message me with questions. The way I am hoping most choose is to call the clinic, give them a credit card number and make the donation that way. One person has suggested I set up a PayPal account. I can see the appeal in that, but I do remember there are fees assessed and I would like to funnel every penny to the treatment instead of the payment mechanism. However, if enough people want this, I will pursue it. The third way is simply to send me a check. I would be thrilled with even $5.00. You can private message me and I will give you my name and address.

So keeping just as a working number the $325 I started with, I would like to let you know I have a pledge of $100 from a very generous DU'er who has followed Nikita's story who wants to help her kids. This means I only need to raise $225.00. I also have a couple of people who said they will donate, but left the amount hanging.

So I apologize for the length of this thread. I know some of you do not get down to the Lounge often and may not have been following this saga. But if you have it in your heart and can afford to make a donation for Nikita's kids, please let me know. As this effort continues, I will keep people informed of how we are progressing. I will also post updated pictures of the kids as I can capture decent shots. I leave you with these snaps of Bo for now.

This is Bo playing his favorite spot. Looks like a cage, but it is not, just a wire plant stand I had that he found and immediately staked a claim on. Stay tuned for more pictures and updates, and please help if you can.

Here Bo is sitting on his security blanket -- what else but a Mickey Mouse towel!

Thanks for reading.

Sam

Please help keep this thread kicked. More info will follow. And many thanks to kind DU'er #1, you know who you are.

Edited to add: DU #1 is sending us $60! She has also posted some great tips in an email in response to a question I asked her. I wanted to put it on this thread, the info, because I keep all these threads for reference purposes. Hopefully, we will be able to do this.

A check is coming in the mail to me for $5.00. I thank DU'er #3 for helping Nikita's kids get the treatment they need. If 13 Du'ers contributed $5.00, that would be enough to totally take care of one of her kittens. Times are tough, but this kind DU'er dug a little deep in his or her pockets and is helping in this effort. Kudos DU'er #3.

I know one person who has done this already and had no problem. Put a donation on his credit card. They close at 4:15 pm Monday through Friday. I ask if people chose to do this, they let me know how much they donate so I can keep tabs on where things stand as far as reaching the goal. But I left a voice mail Monday, and no one had listen to it. Odds are you are better to keep trying the number until you reach a human being. That is what I did Tuesday. They get very busy and/or short-staffed some times.

Thank you for bumping this thread. I hope people will try to keep it kicked, especially for the late-night crowd.

This is a crazy busy forum.

We had made some real progress today. We started out with a pledge of $100, received a message from one DU who is sending me a contribution (amount not known), received a $50 donation directly to the clinic and a $5.00 contribution from a kind DU'er. This totals $155 dollars plus. The target is $325.

We only need $170 more, less the amount of the money order coming in the mail.

I really am hoping to have them all treated the same day, and having them spayed or neutered and all their shots given greatly enhances their adoption chances.

Remember, if only 13 DU'ers give $5.00 to takes care of one kitten.

But if you can only help with keeping the thread kicked, that counts for a lot as well.

Thanking you in advance,

Sam

Kittens who have been vaccinated & cared for are a blessing for them and for the ones who adopt them..

Your story is mine from many years back.. (a bedraggled Mom with kittens)

I too did the spay routine, but she was too feral to become our pet.. I stole her kittens as they were born.. she would just drop them in the yard and never open the sac.... we had to (2 litters before we used a have-a-heart trap & had her fixed & vaccinated).. I bottle-fed 9 kittens (5 the first litter) and 4 the next..

I was able to adopt-out some of the kittens at petsmart..

THANK ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR GIVING, FOR YOUR CARING, AND FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO KEPT HELPING KEEP THE THREAD KICKED.

I have some comments I want to make but I will have to save that until tomorrow. I will re-total everything and double check the math. When all the checks are received, I will deposit them to my checking account and render that amount to Spay Now.

I learned that all the kittens must weight 2 pounds. Nikita's chart shows her at 6.11 pounds. So I am thinking they need to be one-third her size. Two of them I believe might be half her size: Sunny and Monet. Bo is the runt of the litter. In about 6 days, he will have gained more weight and I should have the checks. I will make the appointment to have them all done at the same time, and I will keep you posted on this thread.

In the meantime, please remember the pictures and think of anyone who might be looking for a kitten, if they live in the Washington, DC metro area. I want them to have the best of homes, and I know you do as well.

Last edited Wed Aug 7, 2013, 01:13 AM - Edit history (1)

From its inception about 4 months ago, it was a roller-coaster ride. There were a couple of days I thought I would crash. There is one moment that will always haunt me. There were a couple of moments that were dazzling.

Probably if I had been a person who knew a lot more about cats, I would have never gone down this road. But just seeing a hungry cat that looked way too thin practically begging for food was something I could not ignore. So down the road I started.

I think I grew as a person because I endured this. I had a lot of problems in the beginning with 3 of my neighbors ganging up on me behind my back and calling Animal Control. I was hurt by this because we all get along on this street. We are very neighborly in fact. However, one thing that stood out to me was that human beings can be just as territorial as animals and in that process behave badly.

One thing that really helped me when I felt surrounded and cornered by these people I thought were my friends was simply reading up on the law. I learned that Animal Control will not remove a feral cat from a private yard UNLESS it poses a substantial risk to the public (I assumed by that those words implied something like having rabies). So once I learned that because Nikita jumped the fence and pooped under someone's bushes, that neighbor could not have Animal Control pick it up. "Knowledge is power" people like to say and it certainly was true in this case. I saw the truck marked "Animal control" ride by my house several times and each time I panicked. I knew I could never adopt a feral cat (that is prohibited) but if they did pick her up, did I have any chance of getting her back? I even thought about the worst case scenario that I would hire a lawyer to sue the County if Nikita were picked up by one of their personnel because (a) it would have been illegal; and (b) she might have been euthanized.

I was later told by someone in the know that Animal Control would have never picked her up. They do ride down the street when they get a complaint, but that is just a demonstration that they are responding. All that fear I had during that time was for nothing.

When one neighbor finally came to me face-to-face and complained about Nikita pooping under his bushes, I gave him some material I had acquired at Home Depot that he could put in that patch and cover with just a little chips. I told him cats thought those chips were a form of litter, and that is where they should go. I told him if he covered that patch, Nikita would stop dropping by. And I prepared an area in my yard to entice her to frequent that spot.

Nevertheless, the resentment continued. This from people whose huge dogs have escaped their yard and run the streets, and others who have dogs that bark incessantly and disturb the peace. One of the dogs even bit the mailman because he cannot stand males. I have never in 15 years complained to the authorities about anyone's pet. I understand that people love their animals but cannot always maintain absolute control over them

But once I reached the point that I realized 7 homes on this street had had an opportunity to help Nikita but turned their backs on her, while I was the only one willing to help, I was getting a backlash from those same people, a peace came over me and I started to fight back. I told my one neighbor I was putting a fence around my property and that he would not have to worry about Nikita ever coming over again. "A privacy fence?" he incredulously asked. "Yes, I responded." I am having Lowe's come out next week to give me a quote. At that time, you can decide if you want your fence on this side removed, or are you just going to allow it to remain with my fence butting up against it.

About face! That was the last thing he wanted. So everything has now come down to a quiet acceptance from them that Nikita is here to stay, even if the dog next door doesn't want a cat in the neighborhood! but things will never really be the same. When push comes to shove, I prefer to have the love of Nikita than the betrayal of some of the humans around me. I feel like a much stronger person now, and I know my life has been greatly enriched by Nikita and the kittens. Their lives have been forever changed too because one of their neighbors will never again see them in the same light.

Life is a series of lessons, I guess. I sure learned a lot of them by this event. But I am stronger for it and I have learned a great way to deflect hostility over poop the size of a pea.

And the other great outcome has been that while I have spent 99.9 percent of my 13 years here doing political battle upstairs, I learned there are a lot of truly great people here, people with large hearts and caring souls that I have somehow unfortunately not run into until I went to the Lounge to tell my and Nikita's story.

Cheyenne is getting used to Nikita, but that is as much as I can say. Nikita wants to be friends, but she has a couple of times tried to get her attention by suddenly striking her paw at Cheyenne's face. It really upset me, and Cheyenne didn't really know what was happening (she cannot see, remember) but later I realized Nikita runs beside Cheyenne now on our walks and brushes her side. She wants to be friends with Cheyenne and that was her way of getting Cheyenne's attention. So I am unsure how to train Nikita to not do something that is probably instinctive to her--use her paw to get Cheyenne's attention. We will work it out, but I do not know if Nikita understands Cheyenne cannot see.

A lot of pressure has come off of me now that I know I can get the kittens the treatment they need, and I have all of you to thank for pushing me in the right direction, while giving me guidance all along the way.

I hope you liked the pictures, and if you were in the market for a kitten addition to your family, which would you choose?

Regards,

Sam

Nikita isn't much more than a baby herself and she's very dainty. As for the kittens, at first I was positive if I were to get one it would be Bo, then after looking at the pictures a while longer I thought "well it would definitely be Bo or Dane." Then I noticed how pretty Elise is and I've come to the conclusion I'm glad I don't really have to pick one because each and every one of them has something about them that absolutely melts my heart.

Give Cheyenne and Nikita a little time, they may even become best friends. One of my sisters has a boxer that adores her cranky old cat and although it hurts the cat's tough guy image a little bit, he likes to cuddle up with the dog to sleep.

It really stinks that you've had to battle your neighbors like that. I can understand if they aren't big animal lovers (well actually that's a lie, I can't imagine not loving animals) or if they just aren't in a position to take in Nikita themselves but why would they interfere with your efforts to rescue her.

Ugh, my little nutcase rescue is starting to look for ways to get into trouble and I think that's her way of telling me it's time for bed. Please keep the pictures coming, I'll keep my fingers crossed that some day soon there will be a picture of Cheyenne and Nikita curled up together napping.

It does seem like caring for animals, especially strays, brings out how we feel about the least among us and those in need. For so long, people have said that animals don't have emotions or intelligence or anything but instinct. So it's easy not to care, it's easy to mistreat or abuse them. People have made that argument about certain races or the poor or homeless, still do. I have had lots of trouble with my neighbors complaining about our feral colony as well. I just nicely explain what I'm doing and when I tell them now that they're all fixed and will keep other cats out of the neighborhood, they quiet down. But if I had a neighbor who wanted Animal Control to come pick up an animal to be euthanized because I saw it pooping in his bushes, I don't know that I could ever speak to that person again. That's some seriously self-centered, heard-heartedness right there.

So it's wonderful that you opened your heart to this cat and now you get to share and care for her little family. And thank your for sharing your story with all of us!

41. I said yesterday I wanted to share some final comments on this experience

I was surprised when I read your post because it is along the lines of what I was going to write.

I wouldn't have gotten this far with the fine results without people like you steering me the whole way. That seriously helped distract me from the negativity of some of my neighbors.

I look forward to reporting the final numbers and making the appointment for the kiddies. I took the day off to rest up after this whirl wind of activity. When I went in to feed and play with them, Bo came right up to me. He and Dane seem to think of me as their foster Mom. Monet continues to be shy. Sunny is coming along from watching Bo and Dane. Sometimes Elise looks at me with love in her eyes, but she, like Monet is shy.

I think I am starting to love them too much and it will really hurt when they go. I guess I have to push down the accelerator before I have them too long and can't let go. I would keep them all if I had the room in this house and the resources to take care of them the way they should be taken care of. I just am not in that category of people with unlimited resources. I still have to work to support myself, and during this time frame I have not been able to keep up. I hope maybe some of them end up nearby so I can at least see them from time to time.

Tomorrow I take Cheyenne to the doggie groomer. I am going to ask her and her cat-loving housemate to help me.

Thank you for everything you have done. Couldn't have made it without you.

42. Just a short update

Jul 2013

Today I received the first contributions by mail. One is a money order for $60.00 (Du #1 contributor) and a check for $5.00 (this is either DU #3 or DU #4 but the return mailing address is Fayetteville, AR - if you live here please pm me).

Additionally, we have $235.00 directly on deposit at the hospital: DU'er #2, DU'er #6, DU'er #7 and DU'er #8.

Total on hand $300.00. Probably the balance will arrive shortly.

I will be calling the clinic to make the appointment to have all the kittens treated the same day. They must all weigh at least 2 pounds. Two I am sure are there (Monet and Sunny), one is probably there (Dane) and two will soon be there (Elise and Bo).

I want you to know these kittens are thriving. It has been extremely difficult to balance everything, but I am committed and I have the wonderful support of those of you who have backed me up with donations, advice and even thread-bumping. We all did this together.

I am starting to reach out for interested adoptive parents. Started zealously approaching this yesterday in anticipating of having the surgeries done soon. This afternoon, I received an inquiry from a sound potential possibility who is interested in Monet or Elise.

I will keep you guys posted as I can.

Once again, I cannot thank you enough.

Sam
