President Obama Ruptures John Boehner’s Pipeline of Keystone XL Lies

President Obama went on the offensive in a New York Times interview, and appeared to argue against Keystone XL by debunking the Republicans’ pipeline talking points.

Transcript via The New York Times:

NYT: A couple other quick subjects that are economic-related. Keystone pipeline — Republicans especially talk about that as a big job creator. You’ve said that you would approve it only if you could be assured it would not significantly exacerbate the problem of carbon in the atmosphere. Is there anything that Canada could do or the oil companies could do to offset that as a way of helping you to reach that decision?
Related

MR. OBAMA: Well, first of all, Michael, Republicans have said that this would be a big jobs generator. There is no evidence that that’s true. And my hope would be that any reporter who is looking at the facts would take the time to confirm that the most realistic estimates are this might create maybe 2,000 jobs during the construction of the pipeline — which might take a year or two — and then after that we’re talking about somewhere between 50 and 100 [chuckles] jobs in a economy of 150 million working people.

NYT: Yet there are a number of unions who want you to approve this.

MR. OBAMA: Well, look, they might like to see 2,000 jobs initially. But that is a blip relative to the need.

So what we also know is, is that that oil is going to be piped down to the Gulf to be sold on the world oil markets, so it does not bring down gas prices here in the United States. In fact, it might actually cause some gas prices in the Midwest to go up where currently they can’t ship some of that oil to world markets.

Now, having said that, there is a potential benefit for us integrating further with a reliable ally to the north our energy supplies. But I meant what I said; I’m going to evaluate this based on whether or not this is going to significantly contribute to carbon in our atmosphere. And there is no doubt that Canada at the source in those tar sands could potentially be doing more to mitigate carbon release.

Obama ripped apart every single one of House Speaker John Boehner’s Keystone XL lies. Boehner’s office is still putting out press releases claiming that the pipeline will create 20,000-100,000 jobs.

The president has always said he would evaluate it and then render his decision.
To attack him for doing what he said he would do makes you no better than a common teabagger.
The previous president didn't believe in thoughtful deliberation, how did that work out for the nation

Tell you what, since you are so sure of everything and think there is no need for thoughtful consideration, why don't YOU run for president and if you convince a majority of us to vote for you then you get to make the big national decisions.

Till then keep in mind that most of us like that our president thinks before he acts.

And thanks to all of you who recognize that thinking before acting is a good thing.

And those who see through sophomoric teabag tactic of picking at everything this president says and does.

Lol @ the nerve of rightwing simpletons. Are they really stupid enough to think they can fool their betters?

It is about a President that evaluates a situation before he renders an opinion.

of jobs that would be created (and future projections, of course) were congress to pass a jobs bill for rebuilding our broken infrastructure?

That needs to be advertised if there would, be what I imagine, many more long term jobs.

Thanks Galraedia!

This is a link from your thread. Interesting!

The current House Speaker, John Boehner, has demonstrated that he, like Gingrich, is averse to ethical behavior and it is time for him to resign his position or face an ethics investigation and eventual expulsion from Congress. There is precedent in calling for Boehner’s resignation or expulsion, and ironically, it involved another representative from Ohio. James A. Traficant Jr. of Ohio was expelled in July 2002 after he was convicted of receiving favors, gifts and money in return for performing official acts on behalf of the donors. John Boehner’s case is similar to Traficant’s in that he is performing official acts on behalf of the oil industry and seven Canadian tar sands companies that stand to benefit if the Keystone XL pipeline is built between Canada and the Gulf Coast. Boehner’s official acts on behalf of Canada’s tar sands industry are scandalous because he owns stock in the aforementioned seven companies, and he is using his financial gain as impetus to hold 160 million Americans’ tax cuts hostage in return for immediate approval of the Keystone pipeline.

SNIP

Boehner’s 2010 financial disclosure form reveals his investment of $15,001 to $50,000 in Canadian Natural Resources Ltd, and they are in the business of tar sands oil and are just one of seven companies Boehner bought stocks in. His 2009 disclosure shows no stocks in Canadian Natural Resources Ltd leading any semi-intelligent American to believe Boehner bought stock in Canada’s tar sands just in time to reap financial benefits if and when the pipeline was completed and carrying Canadian oil to Texas for refinement and sale on the foreign market. Boehner’s push, as Speaker of the House, to build the pipeline is beyond simple conflict of interest; he is performing official acts for favors (campaign contributions) and money in the form of dividends from his oil sands stocks. Boehner’s gifts in exchange for performing official acts for the oil industry are $144,150 in the form of campaign contributions in 2010 alone. Boehner must resign or face an ethics investigation that may result in his expulsion from the House.

Boehner makes his unethical activity worse by lying to the American people about the number of jobs the pipeline will create and his assertions have been disproven time and time again. The fact that Boehner lies to the American people for pure personal financial gain and future oil industry campaign contributions is a matter for a House Ethics panel investigation. If Boehner wants to avoid a campaign to remove him from office, he must resign voluntarily to save himself and his family the embarrassment of a protracted ethics investigation.

The number of jobs created would not be that many even during the construction of the pipeline. After it is constructed the company will run the smallest skeleton crew they can to maintain the thing.

They tied it to every budget and he had to side step it. This should be common knowledge, but the media is not into dispensing any of that about anything.

I'm very glad the NYT gave him this venue. He's not getting the chance on cable television, etc. His climate speech was only carried in full on the TWC, FFS.

it's been a struggle to get any of his policy and ideas out in public without them being censored or edited out blatantly. Hope that the NYT or some other paper will keep doing this.

Thanks for posting it...

Expose the extreme conflict of interest (on a Cheney/Halliburton/no bid contracts scale)?

Perhaps because Democrat Susan Rice, National Security Advisor, does as well?
