Rapid City Journal - Public vote set on legalizing booze on Pine RidgePINE RIDGE | The Oglala Sioux Tribe Election Commission has scheduled a vote on legalizing alcohol on the dry Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
The special election is set for Tuesday, Aug. 13.
The Tribal Council in June approved a public referendum on whether to legalize alcohol on the southern South Dakota reservation, where residents sneak in beer and liquor from nearby towns such as Whiteclay, Neb., and alcoholism is rampant.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Less than three minutes into a meeting Monday about alcohol sales in Whiteclay, the president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe walked out on Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman.
Tribal president Bryan Brewer said he left because he felt the governor has no intention of trying to address alcohol-related problems that stem from the Nebraska town that sells millions of cans of beer and borders South Dakota's officially dry Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. He also accused Heineman of greeting him with a hostile tone, an allegation the governor denied.
"He has no plan. He said it's not his problem, it's my problem — solve it," Brewer said at a news conference after the meeting.
Earlier Monday, Heineman said Nebraska has no legal authority to shut down the beer stores unless they violate state law. He said the tribe should provide education and treatment to curb alcohol abuse.

Beer Distributor Stopping Whiteclay Deliveries
SCOTTSBLUFF, NE -
A Scottsbluff beer distributor is limiting deliveries to stores in Whiteclay out of concern about the safety of drivers.
Jeff Scheinost, who owns High Plains Budweiser, has decided to stop delivering to Whiteclay, a tiny town that borders South Dakota and the officially dry Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Scheinost says drivers will deliver only as far as Rushville, 20 miles south of Whiteclay. Retailers can haul beer back to Whiteclay.
Scheinost says he made his decision after repeated incidents, including one Monday in which someone shot pellets at a delivery truck.
