A question was asked of me today by my neice who is 10 years old. She was watching the news with me. A segment came on about Syria. She asked me " why do we hate Muslims here but help them overseas"? I didn't know what to say.

They hear things at school from their friends and classmates. Any bigoted or derogatory remarks heard get discussed. Never assume that children are incapable of forming opinions.

(25,406 posts)not "we hate Muslims". I hope she doesn't think that President Obama or any of his appointees hate Muslims. In any case, a good answer to her question would be that while there are horrible bigots who hate Muslims, just as some people are racists and anti-Semites, President Obama is not one of those people, and it is he who makes the decision that we need to help people overseas.

Question answered.
As long as we cover that base, right?
We have huge, widespread and sanctioned cultural hate against Muslims. Nobody bothered to dismantle that after Bush declared his Holy War(TM).
