Why Obama isn't picking up the phone.

From Mark Mardell on the BBC site:

Conservatives loathe Obamacare and will do anything to wreck it.

They say it will hurt people and the economy. They say opinion polls show a majority are against it.

That's why they have linked what should be a simple matter - funding the government - with a plan to gut the bill.

President Obama is scornful. "Think about it, shutting down the government just because you don't like a law that was passed and found constitutional," he told an audience in Maryland.

The Republicans' ideological fervour has convinced many of them that they are right, and even more that they must look over the shoulder at the Tea Party or risk the next election.

There's little doubt a shutdown would harm the US image and do some damage to the real economy.

So as the hours tick by to a shutdown, the Republican leadership is sounding a little desperate, backed in to a corner. And the Democrats are enjoying watching them squirm.

At a news conference the Speaker of the House, John Boehner, seemed to be pleading with the president to give them something, anything in return for passing a bill.

But the Democrats' leader in the Senate, Harry Reid, had a simple reply to reporters' questions about whether he would negotiate about this, that or the other: "No", "no" and "no".

He said he wouldn't negotiate with a gun pointed at the head of the American people - and talked of Republicans "walking over a cliff", taking "the path to oblivion". One of his colleagues said the impasse was the result of "Tea Party temper tantrums".

They were enjoying themselves, in a rather stern, grim way.

If the Republicans do blink, the war in their ranks will intensify. If they don't they could be seen as putting the obsession of their activists before the needs of the country.

It's little wonder the president isn't picking up the phone.

Something about how Congress functions. ACA was already law by the time he was elected. I know he runs to his little select groups in Townhall meeting and they cheer for him but it was a done deal when he arrived. Now he can go back to these same groups and tell them he is was stupid to say he was going to get this repealed. Eat your crow teddy boy.

They believe in "Capitalism" which to them is packaging dog shit in a pretty package with a designer label and having the right sales pitch from the right spokesman.

Their ideas DON'T WORK.

It's not a case of changing the packaging or the spokesman.

Then to top it off their flip-flopping on core items just to oppose Obama has become a JOKE.

Sun Sep 29, 2013, 11:33 PM

The "majority" of people opposed to Obamacare always includes 15-20% who are opposed to this plan because it DOESN'T GO FAR ENOUGH. Take those people out of the mix and you always have less than 45% in favor of repealing Obamacare. And then take away the people who have no idea what any of this means and you have about 15% who are actually opposed to Obamacare and have half an idea what the law actually does.

Finally, poll people on the actual provisions of the law (allowing 25-year-ols to remain on parents' policies, ending pre-existing conditions, getting more low-income people insured so the rest of us don't have to pay inflated prices when the low income can't pay their bills, etc.) and there is almost nobody against it.

This administration has done just about the worst possible job marketing this thing. I sure hope they are ready to go full bore starting October 1.

mantra "It is not the policy of the US Government to negotiate with terrorists, foreign or domestic."

Let the Republicans incur with wrath of the American people when they shut down the federal government. Democrats should refuse to let them game the system by allowing a few select governmental activities (paying out social security to senior citizens, military pay, keeping the Air Traffic Controlers working, etc.). If they want to tank the Federal Govt. let them tank the whole thing and then live with the consequences.

The Obama White House should be looking at whatever legal avenues are available because what the Republicans are involved in is a domestic terroist activity.
