If the House GOP caucus came forward with that deal today, they wouldn't just avert a shutdown; they'd be lauded as heroes.

Gingrich's actual shutdown 20 years ago was over a 1.5% cut in discretionary spending, with no policy changes attached.

1. I'm not going to cheer for 'shutting it down' in any way. I'd rather say "Get over it and vote".

Article in NYTimes today claims House has enough votes to pass the required bills cleanly but the leadership is afraid of angering the crazies.
