that they are sick and tired of paying for the uninsureds' emergency room visits through raises in their insurance rates? Maybe I'm wrong on that, but someone is paying it.

My MIL is one of them. She didn't even care that my husband (her son) would be furloughed with the govt shutdown. She beleives his sacrifice is for the greater good of the country. Furthermore, her other son is self employed and isn't in a job that rakes in money hand over fist. He told my husband he and his wife don't have health insurance. I think they have some simple insurance plan for their daughters. MIL thinks ACA is the debil and must be stopped - even though it would be a great help to her son and grandchildren.

She infuriates me that her loyalty lies more with the tea baggers and Ted Cruz than her own family. It's insane.

They all got on the Rush Limbaugh "Let this President Fail" bandwagon and tried to kill reform. It passed anyways. Now they need to take the political hit when people start to get help and like it. Their party is to weak to absorb that hit. The demographic shift is already making it nearly impossible for them to continue as a national party for any length of time. If they take a big hit now they may be done.

They are doubling down on a bet they already can't afford to pay. If they lose again it doesn't really hurt them because they already are so screwed. It is their only hope.

Not that they don't hate him, because they do. But what really has them screwing themselves into the ceiling is this: what if the country as a whole and particularly the younger generation learn that government really CAN make a positive difference in their lives? That government ISN'T the problem?*

That is the entire premise of the Reagan revolution: everything will be better if we can just get government out of the way. It was self-serving BS then, and with a major step forward in health care--as flawed as it is--it is about to be shown as such.

It's a death knell.

*unless Republicans are running it. There's an old saw that says that you can't complain about the government if you didn't vote. Or if you voted Republican.

It ignores 40 years of drum-thumping about how Democrats just use YOUR HARD-EARNED MONEY to buy the votes of shiftless (wink wink, you know whos), who just want to lay about doing drugs and having babies.

You can argue details of how that's wrong until you're blue in the face, but the moment they shift back to a more general level they snap back to the stereotype picture they have in their heads.

To them, this is just one more "handout".

They buy into the bullshit meme of 'socialism is coming to eat your babies'. So... they serve the 1% in any way they are asked even when it hurts them as well as everyone else.

But I think that is a much smaller wing (though still potent) and for the most part, they just try to get that one part changed (and they MUST be stopped from doing so). The larger part, I believe, are the ones that buy into the whole 'socialism' thing. My brother is one of these types and he really does believe that socialism is such a great evil yet has no clue what it even really is... Just what he hears in media and reads on right wing blogs. It's crazy.

That's why they are such hard core obstructionists. They said even before
the 2008 inauguration that they wanted Obama's presidency to fail. And
they have been trying their best ever since to do whatever harm they
could even if the result would be without a doubt bad for the country.

Lots of low-information whites have been brought and kept on board with the covert racism of "He's a socialist." Meaning "He's a n*****."

If President Howard Dean or John Edwards or Joe Biden were pushing this (although then the law would perhaps be less of a giveaway to the insurance companies), we'd see very different numbers.
