Anita Perry upstages Wendy Davis - and her own husband (Gov. Perry's wife is pro-choice)

Wendy Davis has spent much of the last few months being the most visible woman in Texas politics. After news leaked days ago that she is likely to fulfill the wish of progressives everywhere by running for governor of the Lone Star state, it was destined to only increase her star power.

But something unexpected happened.

The week that her big announcement was supposed to take the political world by storm, Davis appears to have had her thunder stolen by another Texas political leading lady. During an interview last weekend at the Texas Tribune Festival, Texas First Lady Anita Perry replied to a question about abortion by saying she sees it “as a woman’s right.”

A woman saying she sees abortion as “a woman’s right” is not exactly news. But a woman married to one of the most anti-choice governors in one of the most anti-choice states in the country saying she sees abortion as “a woman’s right” is news. . .

Anita Perry: Abortion 'Could Be A Women's Right' (VIDEO)

Anita Perry, wife of Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R), declared Saturday that abortion "could be a women's right."

When pressed on women's rights by Texas Tribune's Evan Smith at the 2013 Texas Tribune Festival, the First Lady of Texas said, "That's really difficult for me, Evan, because I see it as a women's right. If they want to do that, that is their decision; they have to live with that decision."

"Mrs. Perry, I want to be sure you didn't just inadvertently make news," Smith replied. "Are you saying that you believe abortion is a women's right, to make that choice?"

Smith pressed again, asking if she believed it's a person's decision within the law, to which Anita Perry replied, "Yeah, that could be a women's right. Just like it's a man's right if he wants to have some kind of procedure. But I don't agree with it, and that's not my view."

might be okay with abortion rights. Not everyone who is pro-choice would have an abortion even under the worse circumstances.
