White House spokesman Jay Carney said Monday that lifting the debt ceiling will be non-negotiable for as long as Barack Obama is president.
"Whether it's today, or a number of weeks from now, or a number of months from now, or a number of years from now, it will always be Congress's responsibility to raise our debt ceiling so that the United States can pay the bills that Congress has incurred," he told reporters during his daily briefing.
"It will always be, as long as he's president, President Obama's position that that responsibility is not negotiable. That there's not a game of trading for political priorities or agenda items that Republicans have not been able to achieve through legislation or the ballot box."
Carney said the White House supports efforts in the Senate to pass a "clean" debt limit hike.

And one of the things I noticed and its something thats very common in human beings we all try to mollify or appease the crazy uncle at Thanksgiving dinner. You know, Dont make a scene. Well, I noticed in the last few years of my service on the Hill that a number of Democrats seemed to be afraid of Republicans. And Obama pretty much wasted his first term trying to mollify them. I think hes finally stumbled upon a strategy thats better: simply not give them what they demand. Because this is a deliberate strategy to hold the government hostage."

(6,452 posts)I'm leaning towards believing this, actually. The teahadists have threatened the one thing Obama actually cares about - the institution of the US government.
But history will tell the tale.
Edit: And I'm glad that he said this (or had Carney do it.) It was the right thing to do.

WHY are we not turning it around and shoving it back down their throats? Because that's EXACTLY what they are. SORE LOSERMEN!!!! Let's hang it around THEIR necks where it belongs!

(81,518 posts)Makes me wonder what took him so long. I guess he regarded them with more respect and normal give-and-take than they deserve! They deserve NOTHING.
What they deserve is to be sent upstairs to bed without supper.
What they deserve is to have it jammed down their miserable scrawny throats, and then drop-kicked through the front door.
What they deserve is NO REINFORCEMENT OR REWARD FOR BAD BEHAVIOR!!! Even Dr. Laura Schlessinger would tell you that! And she's pretty much one of 'em.
What they do NOT deserve is to get their way after throwing a temper tantrum like this. Would any of them raise their children that way? (Uh... don't answer that. Because I'm no longer sure about these assholes - that they'd do ANYTHING correctly or reasonably or properly! Hell, they'd probably think some five-year-old snot-nosed tantrum-thrower was being "heroic" or "valiant" or "courageous" or "gutsy" - standing up for what he or she BELIEVES!!!! )

Were not going to negotiate under the threat of further harm to our economy and middle-class families. Were not going to negotiate under the threat of a prolonged shutdown until Republicans get 100 percent of what they want. Were not going to negotiate under the threat of economic catastrophe that economists and CEOs increasingly warn would result if Congress chose to default on Americas obligations.
Now, the other thing I heard over the weekend was this notion that Congress doesnt have the capacity to end this shutdown. The truth of the matter is there are enough Republican and Democratic votes in the House of Representatives right now to end this shutdown immediately, with no partisan strings attached. The House should hold that vote today. If Republicans and Speaker Boehner are saying there are not enough votes, then they should prove it. Let the bill go to the floor and lets see what happens. Just vote. Let every member of Congress vote their conscience and they can determine whether or not they want to shut the government down.
My suspicion is -- my very strong suspicion is that there are enough votes there. And the reason that Speaker Boehner hasnt called a vote on it is because he doesnt, apparently, want to see the government shutdown end at the moment unless hes able to extract concessions that don't have anything to do with the budget. Well, I think the American people simply want government to work. And theres no reason that there has to be a shutdown in order for the kinds of negotiations Speaker Boehner says he wants to proceed. Hold a vote. Call a vote right now, and lets see what happens.
The second thing Congress needs to do is to raise the debt ceiling next week so the Treasury can pay the bills that Congress has already spent. That's what most Americans do if they buy something -- if they buy a car or if they buy a house, if they put something on a credit card, they understand theyve got to pay the bills.
This is something routine. Its been done more than 40 times since Ronald Reagan was President. It has never before been used in the kind of ways that the Republicans are talking about using it right now. We can't threat an economic catastrophe in the midst of budget negotiations.
So authorize the Treasury to pay Americas bill. Pass a budget, end the government shutdown, pay our bills, and prevent an economic shutdown.

(86 posts)our President's clear resolve in this crisis. Sadly, by saying that "it will always be Congress's responsibility to raise our debt ceiling" he appears to have ruled out either the platinum coin or the 14th Amendment solutions. I was hoping the adult in the room could take care of this; that sanity could triumph over insanity.

(81,518 posts)Glad you're here! It's too bad we can't do something about that "Congress has to allocate the funds..." and "it's Congress's job to be in charge of the budget" stuff. They've proven by now that they're completely unable to handle a big job like this responsibly. It should be taken away from them and assigned to some other entity, because they simply can't, or won't manage it properly or responsibly.

(81,518 posts)What if we started stirring the pot? Get a conversation started. In public. Online. In the blogs. On Daily Kos. Here. Facebook. ANYWHERE! Put it out there - END Congress's jurisdiction over budgetary matters!!! They've proven they can't handle this huge responsibility that was entrusted to them. If you crash the car or run up too many tickets, what do Mom and Dad do? If they're sensible and grounded in reality and reasonable adulthood, they'll take the damn keys and driving privileges away!
How 'bout we start spreading this around - hopefully it'll go viral!

(86 posts)Just repeal the legislation that has created the debt limit. This ain't in the constitution. Then the debt goes up or down according to the need to cover all bills enacted into law. Worked fine for years until, wait for it, Republicans got nervous in the face of Roosevelt's stimulus efforts. Of course, these debt limits are acts of congress and don't, I believe require a presidential signature, so they can only be revoked by an act of congress, which has become oxymoronic, the nicest kind of moronic that applies.

(18,652 posts)Why do the rich pay a lower % on their dividend income than workers pay on their income tax? geesh, today I heard Boner complaining about how high the debt ceiling is, and waaaaah, O won't do anything about it. When will the rich asses have to pay? they not only make high salaries but pay less % in tax than I do as a middle (barely) income earner.

(7,549 posts)He needs to continue to hold firm after too. The Tea Pukers should not get to do what the majority of the country does not want them to do through any sort of "negotiations," regardless of when they are held.
Elections not negotiations should be the deciding factor.

(18,641 posts)If he doesn't negotiate it will be the very first time in his presidency.
He has said this before several times and it always has ended with a negotiation.
He said he wouldn't negotiate because then the stakes would be raised next time.
He negotiated and the stakes were raised this time.
I don't see any reason for this to be different.
Sorry.
I expect him to negotiate at he last minute to the detriment of all America in order to prevent world economic collapse.
And the stakes will be higher next time.

(344 posts)Today or years down the road, this is non-negotiable. We default it's all on the Repubs. Boehner will be out, especially since all he had to do was take a vote in the House. Which I think he will eventually allow or the Repubs won't have a chance for the WH in the next 20 years if they default.
