Layaway bills paid off by secret Santas

Anonymous donors in the United States are paying off the layaway accounts of strangers, buying the toys and games set aside by impoverished parents for their children.

Last week, a young father in dirty clothes and worn-out boots stood in line at the Kmart layaway counter, Edna Deppe, assistant manager at the store in Indianapolis,recalled.

With him were three small children. He asked to pay something on his bill because he knew he wouldn't be able to afford it all before Christmas. Then a mysterious woman stepped up to the counter.

"She told him, 'No, I'm paying for it,'" Deppe said. "He just stood there and looked at her and then looked at me and asked if it was a joke. I told him it wasn't, and that she was going to pay for him. And he just busted out in tears."

when I get in a position to do something like this it will be fun.

We always adopt some younger kid from the Angel tree, it feels good. I only wish we could see the smiles when they get their gift.

This year, my daughter had a sit-down with her children, all are school-age, and talked to them about cutting in half the amount of money that would be spent on their gifts by her, taking that half and donating it to a local Christmas charity for the poor and homeless. My grandchildren agreed with it, I was and am so proud of them all and told them I would match that amount and contribute to the same charity they chose.

Their choice was to send it to the local charity that provides a food basket full of goodies for Christmas dinner, turkey and all, for the poor.

What was done in the article is certainly something else to put in the 'pot' for consideration maybe next year!
