Nevada Teacher Killed Trying To Protect Students From Shooter Is Being Hailed As A Hero

The teacher who was killed Monday morning trying to protect middle school students from a shooter on the grounds has been identified as Michael Landsberry, according to NBC. Two people — the teacher and the shooter — died at Sparks Middle School near Reno, Nev. Two others, both minors, were also injured. Landsberry was 45 years old and had a wife and two stepdaughters, according to the Associated Press.

Witnesses told the Reno Gazette-Journal that a boy wearing a Sparks Middle School uniform opened fire outside the school Monday morning. Police have not confirmed how the shooter died, but multiple media reports say he killed himself. He was a student at the school. A witness told the Gazette-Journal that a teacher told the shooter to put the gun down before he was shot.

The student said: "We were at school, we were by the basketball court and we heard a pop, like a loud pop, and everybody was screaming. And then the teacher came to investigate. I thought it was a firecracker at first, but the student was pointing a gun at the teacher after the teacher told him to put it down. And then the student fired a shot at the teacher and the teacher fell and everybody ran away. ... While we were running, we heard about four or five more shots."

Landsberry's sister-in-law told the Gazette-Journal: "To hear he was trying to protect those kids doesn’t surprise me at all. He could have ducked and hid, but he didn’t. That’s not who he is."

What a waste... As usual the coward of a shooter is dead by his own hand.

Glad no others were killed and sad about the entire thing, just relieved it wasn't worse.

The shooter is a child, a student. I'm going to reserve judgement against that child and feel horrible for all involved.

No. Never. Killing unless in self-defense is not justified and the defense should be equal to the force used. For example, bullying, even getting roughed up, is not a valid defense for killing.

And had the shooter lived, I also would be against the death penalty.

I was irritated with the "withholding of judgement" because there are no scenarios where we could say "Oh, now I see"

Fuck the shooter and I hope he rots in hell...

I choose to feel tremendous sorrow for all involved. Please take your anger elsewhere. This story has made me incredibly sad, and I don't want to play today. Thank you.

It's been discussed on CNN, for example.

Associated Press and the NYT have also carried it.

Anderson Cooper talked about it. Piers Morgan talked about it.

The story was picked up by the NYT. I don't know where you get your news, but that is "all over the country."

Hell, all over the world for that matter. The UK's Daily Mail also had a big story on it.

When it was one of the biggest discussions on Twitter and Facebook, it couldn't be avoided.

Face it: You were wrong about it. The person above just didn't pay attention.

Not everybody gets their news from the big three anymore, but local papers out of state even had the AP wire.

whichever teacher or other official who is around and sees something like this happening is willing to give their own lives to prevent others from being hurt.
