I have never lived in poverty, and therefore tend not to presume the motivations of the poor for what they do or do not do. I think a lot of my life would be affected if I often did not know where my next meal was coming from or if I was under constant threat of being evicted.

Melville is one of the greatest (and the most prophetic) of American writers and probably not one in a thousand informed readers of American literature, (i.e. English majors, if the category still exists() have ever heard of this passage from his works. I certainly hadn't.
