"If you're 26 or older and your health insurance is about to double because you're not insured through your job, what would you do?"
Take the penalty.
Buy insurance now anyway.
Wait until I got sick to buy.

(12,017 posts)isn't there a standard 'open enrollment' period like with any other health insurance? I mean, if you opt NOT to buy coverage and go for the penalty and then you're diagnosed with some significant illness in JAN or FEB, you cannot go onto the exchange and buy a policy until the next 'open enrollment' period???
maybe i have misunderstood...

(12,017 posts)though I have seen no confirmation of this (no, I haven't read the whole ACA). but the people saying 'i'll wait til i get sick' are really making a terribly stupid decision... hopefully someone explains the dangers to them...

(4,631 posts)It's not like the ACA has a legacy yet to declare it the holy grail of salvation. I wonder what other edicts deserve such cold, hard knocks in life? Drugs? Bad luck? Riding a bike sans helmet? If you choose/deny "X", you get what's coming to you?
The ACA is too new to be the shibboleth some are proclaiming it to be.

(344 posts)Lousy framing. If you're 26 or older and your health insurance is about to double because you're not insured through your job, but this insurance is less than half of what you would pay for cobra, what would you do?

(19,497 posts)And statistically speaking they're safe with just catastrophic coverage. The ACA admits as much because it relies on them to pay premiums for services they overwhelmingly won't utilize so more money will be in the pool for the older and/or sicker members.
The penalty being as low as it is in comparison to substantially higher insurance costs acts as an incentive to effectively become a tax protester. Except now insurance companies won't even collect for catastrophic plans and the (very little ) amount collected from the penalty will go to the IRS. The loss of revenue will be shifted to current policy holders...which will push more people out of the market. It could become a death spiral for insurance and the GOP will be waiting with their ad campaign to exploit it.

Maybe:, "If you are unmarried with no children making over $50,000.00 a year and your health insurance cost is about to double...."

(19,497 posts)What are my odds of getting sick vs. the cost of a policy with or without a subsidy vs. the cost of the.tax penalty. Is it gambling? Yeah, but Las Vegas makes billions every year offering substantially crappier odds. People will take the gamble and the policy holders will have to make up the difference.

(5,937 posts)and that is the real problem. It may encourage some people to finally take action for themselves and get covered but I honestly believe a lot of people just cannot be bothered.
