DUer, sunwyn (in SW Ohio currently), desperately needs our help (UPDATE & QUESTION)

Last edited Fri Nov 1, 2013, 08:25 AM - Edit history (7)

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone helping in various ways....donating money, writing sunwyn to let her know she isn't alone, offering other resources, etc.

Sunwyn posted a question below (#26), asking about DAYTON, OHIO. She has been focused on Missouri because of familiarity, but if she can find affordable housing that she is able to rent (difficult because of credit issues), public transportation and a job, she'll certainly stay in Ohio. Someone told her about possible rentals in the Dayton area, so she is asking DUers if they know anything about Dayton and can offer feedback about that area. Thanks!

(Other DUers who are in dire straits and have Wishlist posts, please know I'm in the process of transferring your Wishlist posts into the new Fundraising area and will create an OP in the next couple of days to highlight links to your requests. Please consider creating an OP here at DU to bring attention to your situation, and/or comment below with "ALERT!" in the subject line to bring attention to your comment and need. I'm sorry for the inconvenience this transition is causing.)

Last week Wishadoo! finally underwent both a site upgrade AND had a new fundraising module added. While that's great news, it means there are glitches to be worked out. Still, sunwyn's situation is desperate, so I'm creating this post -- asking for your patience, as well as asking you to please help in any way you can. I can tell you that in my interactions with sunwyn over the last year, I'm always impressed with how stoic she is; but I can tell she is sinking into an absolute panicked state now, mainly regarding her mom and, secondarily, for her own situation. If you have any problems logging in or creating an account at Wishadoo, please message me. (See my most recent Help A DUer OP which links to many, though not all, of the current DUer requests.)

Okay, regarding sunwyn...

You may recall that we've been trying to raise funds toward the purchase of a vehicle. She simply can't remain in Ohio; the situation for her and her mom keeps going from bad to worse (she has to walk 9 miles just to go to interviews!). She is currently in the southwest part of Ohio...near Camden...in a fairly remote area, evidently.

Here is what she wrote in her new fundraising post:

Things have gone from bad to worse. I'm happy to share details with anyone who may want to know them, but suffice it to say that we can't stay here. Landlord issues, transportation issues, no support of any sort available at all.

I used to live in Missouri and feel it would be best for us to return there. I found a place that will let us move in but I need to come up with at least $2000 to move. I tried to find a place locally but with no credit, I can't even find a rental (we can't stay where we are due to the landlord's problems). I am terrified my mom is going to end up in a county facility (which is ATROCIOUS here), and that I'll end up homeless.

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading.

I have limited time on the computer, but will try to check messages as much as possible. If you have any questions, I'm happy to answer them.

The good news is that Wishadoo!'s fundraising section functions like any of the other fundraising platforms (gofundme, giveforward, etc), except that Wishadoo isn't taking any percentage of the donations.

There are tools to share the listing to get more attention and assistance, a progress bar built in which shows the progress of the fundraiser, and there are tools for the person who created the fundraising post to keep track and communicate with the kind souls who have reached out and helped.

AGAIN, THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR PATIENCE WITH ME AND WISHADOO, AND FOR OFFERING SUNWYN ANY SUPPORT YOU CAN PROVIDE. REMEMBER, EMOTIONAL SUPPORT AND WELL WISHES ARE PRICELESS!!!! If you know of any resources or agencies who can possibly help, please let sunwyn know. Maybe some Missouri people (near the Ozarks) can get in touch with sunwyn to see if they can help with this move and transition? We've tried to find DUers in the southwest part of Ohio before, to no avail, though maybe this time we'll find help. If someone has time, maybe you can share this OP in those state groups? Thanks!!!

Being a poor person myself I can rarely help with these campaigns beyond encouragement. My picture slowly improves so I find I am able to send $10. Not much but hey, if we all did it (and I know some can do much more while some can do none) we could help save this DUer and her mom from a terrible fate.

At times like this, I wish I were wealthy. I'm thinking of you, Sunwyn, and all the others on Wishadoo in need of a little compassion and a helping hand.

Interesting that your first post, or one of your first posts, is so filled with negativity. Kinda judgy of the rest of us here, aren't you.

$720 when I just checked. I'm kicking in what I can. It's not a lot, but if many can help a little, we can get her on the road.

Let's pump it up. I'm so grateful that I can help a little right now. And I'm so pleased to be among so many who care and give what they can.

I see it's over $700 now and it was only around 200.00 when I donated so things are moving!

I just got a call from a guy in Dayton Ohio about rental properties there. Does anyone know anything about this area? Public transport? Jobs? Bad neighborhoods. I would have no transport in Missouri but I am wondering if Dayton, Oh may be an option for me and my mom. Anyone in that area or knows about the area, I would appreciate your help! Thanks.
