Upset that your paycheck isn't quite the size you'd like it to be? Ready to blame your company, the economy, Obama? Turns out you need to look a lot closer to home: in the mirror, specifically. A new study from CareerAssessmentSite.com indicates that your personality, specifically how driven and results-oriented you are, has a significant impact on your earning potential.
Granted, this shouldn't be world-shattering news to you. But it's useful for understanding how our specific personality types map out against the demands of work. The study at CareerAssessmentSite uses the famed Myers-Briggs Personality Test, which divides everyone into one of 16 personality types based on introversion/extroversion, rationality/emotion, and so forth. I was pleased to note that this ENFP (me) beat the averages significantly! As a scientist in pharma, most of my colleagues had no idea where I was coming from (esp. the F part)...
But, most of my bosses throughout my corporate life were ENTJs.

(60,014 posts)understanding colleagues and friends. What I've most often seen, sadly, is the tool used as a "weapon" or to create teams exactly in the image of the leader - with no value of diversity.
I liked the tool so much that I am now a trained tool administrator.....though I've not found occasion to use it yet, as I've moved careers away from consulting.

I find this rather amusing and typical
because I've always thought of my
life as rulebreaking.
OK, I should add, seriously, it's likely
that education, race, and a stable early
family really make the difference here.

(8,646 posts)use these tests to hire the type they desire. So not necessarily a scientific study. Any large corporation that has organizational behavior specialists will have these tests ready to go in the hiring process - but not sure how widespread that is or how much it would affect the study.
that said - I went to several different sites (Because the one linked in the article is down) and I did 3 different tests and got 3 different results. That's likely because the only one I rate 'strong' with is the N. All the other's I'm very weak with, which means I'm in the middle somewhere. I don't quite know what that means, except I'm versatile, LOL.

(60,014 posts)there is no weakness in any of the parameters - just natural preferences. All people use what they need when they need it!
I happen to have strong natural preferences - I've taken the test many times, and I end up being pegged in each of the parameters near the max. But I often work outside of those natural preferences - it just makes me really tired!
