It's not okay to hate people b/c of race, gender, sexual preference -- or weight.

You're not sounding superior when you profess contempt for people of size. No one is thinking, "wow, they've really got control of their lives. They must be rich and skinny!" And classy, too!

I'm a Democrat because I don't like bullies and showing contempt for people of size suggests that you have a need to put people down.

Is it okay to hate black folks... if they're FAT? Is it okay to discriminate against a lesbian couple... if one partner is overweight? Or, does minority status mitigate weight hatred for fear that one might be confused for the other? Do you see how corrosive this is?

If you must participate in fat bashing, fine -- that's your business. But just know this: it says something about your character that you'll never be able work off no matter how hard you hit the gym.

Seriously. I have such a hard time stating what I feel but you summed this up beautifully.
I would add it's not okay to hate based on looks (which is subjective), height, disability and the list could go on.
Hate is overused and typically a lazy argument or lazy descriptor when coupled with a physical trait.

The impulse to find a way to demean people based on looks or group status seems like rightwinger territory, but the idea that you can judge someone's character by their appearance is apparently attractive to the reptile mind, or to those who derive their own self-esteem from something inherent and irrelevant.

Having said that, I think if somebody wants to hate something, that's up to them. What I don't care to see is have them act on it.

So I think we can skip the question of whether it's a simple emotion the OP is talking about.

And it's more than unhealthy. It's incredibly small-minded and weak to derive a sense of superiority, or make an expression of contempt, on the theory you can judge someone by their appearance.

... or make an expression of contempt, on the theory you can judge someone by their appearance."

Of course what you say is true. I've just seen so much of it for so long that I think of it as the "standard" for most of the Human Race.
In my opinion, it really boils down to not being fully able to put yourself in somebody else's shoes.

One thing I DO have fun hating is cantaloupe....it's a joy to despise it.

I can understand feeling uncomfortable at those remarks. If it helps, I hate him for being a bullying prick, not because of his weight.

Sure, I know there are those who discriminate against bottoms, especially power bottoms, but I doubt it comes up very often in most conversations.
