This is because your newspaper still thinks it can control the information you have access to. It's almost quaint.
Recently, the state of Texas began enforcing a law that forces women to have an ultrasound before an abortion. This procedure would involve the woman having a wand inserted inside her even if the abortion is because she was raped which, of course, is exactly the kind of irony and nuance that anyone involved in the abortion debate is physically incapable of seeing.
However, you know who are good at seeing irony? Cartoonists! Thats why, next week, Garry Trudeaus Doonesbury will be running a weeklong series of strips on the subject. However, some newspapers are considering pulling the series and running repeats because of the content. Clearly, this will be the most controversial reproductive rights-related comic strip since Marmaduke got neutered.

(6,199 posts)Little kids mostly don't read that. It's not about kids; it's about fundie adults who want to pretend they aren't trying to legislate rape.

(64,933 posts)Occasionally you might see something by Paul Krugman, but mostly it is writers with the intelligence of a first grader trying to make sense of the world.
That is why Doonesbury is normally in the Comics Insert to your paper.

But of course if Doonesbury is to present a comic strip about a grotesquely perverted law, we must somehow "shield the children"!!11!!!
Besides, little kids simply gloss over the political cartoons. I'd really like to know one little kid you know that ever reads Luckovich or Danziger....

For an educational peek behind the curtain, heres a look at some of the different paths I could have chosen. Journalism students take special note.

since that time Cathy thought her legs looked fat in the stirrups.

since that time the Family Circus revealed that Billys real father was Not Me
since that time all of Bloom County got neutered.
since that time Loretta Lockhorn refused to bring a child into a loveless marriage.

Kids don't bother reading Doonesbury. They would sooner try to make sense of Gasoline Alley.

(2,830 posts)Make sure to write them a letter telling them why.
Point out how they will run any right-wing talking point about why the government must invade women's vaginas but won't run a comic strip that emphasizes the issue.

(18,665 posts)Though he says time spent away from the drawing board is the most cherished time he has, I'm glad he hangs in there. Serial artists of his calibre is dwindling to nothing and I'll deeply miss him when he's gone.
Meanwhile, I'll also miss The "Red Rogue" next week. He's hands down my favorite Doonsebury character these days.

(27,677 posts)they used to cut down trees and print the news on them. Then once or twice a day they would pay someone to drop the printed tree parts at your door. Insane, I know. But probably no more insane that using rockets to deliver the mail as was once seriously proposed.
