in the open enrollment period.

We will easily exceed the goal. In what universe is greatly exceeding the goal considered a failure of any kind?

13. I don't know. The spreadsheet says
Sun Dec 29, 2013, 03:44 PM
Dec 2013

"The 7 million private enrollment figure was a projection by the CBO about how many people they *expected* to enroll by 3/31/14, not an actual "success threshold". However, this number has been inextricably baked into the public consciousness as the "bar for success" so that's what's being used as a "target" number."

If that were the expectation for only the private enrollments, that means the expectation for total enrollments would have been over 30 million, which doesn't make sense.

If there are 50 million uninsured, the most that could possibly be enrolled would be under 40 million because of all the red states that are not expanding Medicare. It looks like the total enrollments will be over 10 million, which seems pretty good for the first year, considering that doesn't include people who were allowed to continue purchasing pre-ACA policies.

Anthem/BlueCross/BlueShield....sure is better then the crummy Golden Rule junk insurance I had before and costs less. Lower deductables, way better co-insurance - just a much better plan. I love Obama he finally did what I have been waiting for, for near 20 years.

Because people getting sick is supposed to be all about cashing in.

This country has warped values.

Say a doctor sets up practice in a sleepy town where everyone is healthy. He scrapes by on an average living mending the occasional broken bone from a fall.

Under a Capitalistic model, that doctor would poison the well of the town and make everyone pay for expensive tests and a select very rich few would be given the antidote and the trouble making Liberal types would be blamed for the illness.

It's certainly good news for the new Medicaid enrollees and we can all be happy for them.

But the numbers quoted in the OP aren't real good for Obamacare as a whole. What those numbers tell us is that two-thirds of the new enrollees aren't paying into the system when what we need is for there to be approximately 7 million enrolling in the market plans, and approximately 40% of those younger, healthier people, and paying into the system in order to support the coverage for those who are older or sicker.......and poorer and on Medicaid.

That's why most of the news sources are touting today that enrollment has "topped 1 million" and statements of the kind. It's the numbers enrolling in private plans that count toward the 7 million goal. Can they make it there by the end of March? We can hope, but only time will tell.

Medicaid accounts aren't going to do that. There have to be enough people paying INTO the system to cover the expenses of those who cannot pay. I'm always surprised that that's so difficult for some people to understand.

The larger issue becomes who is responsible for the people getting sick. If people can't go to the doctor and they're being poisoned by sulfur from coal mines or developing cancer from their diet we can't prove that's what's going on.

In the current system we'll never know. If you look at Kentucky signing up all of those poor people in coal mining country, it won't be hard to make the correlation between health hazards and mining practices (if they exist).

It will cost the folks who are trying to gut the EPA some serious money in the form of cleaning up their operations and the whole thing can be paid for by the polluters since it can be easily demonstrated by the available data.

Fines for polluting and class action suits will generate plenty of money. The Medicaid expansion is probably the best part of Obamacare for the country.
