(20 posts)I hate hate hate winter. I am going grocery shopping after work (making a big pot of stew and some chili, homemade bread) and I am not leaving my house until Tuesday. Screw this. I like living in a blue state but I miss the warmth of Arizona.

(18,402 posts)We lived in Minnesota for nearly 15 years, and we're in Chicago now (which is temperate by comparison, though the wind makes it kind of worse, actually).
I recall the brief moments of venturing out into -20 below weather (with 60 below windchill). Generally, it's very calm and still (and often sunny) when these temperatures occur. You can immediately feel the fluids in your outer body--in your eyes and nose--begin to freeze on contact. Whee! It's kind of amazing, since one doesn't think of these fluids very often.
But the sound is really the best part--the sound of the snow squeaking, as you mentioned; and the utter stillness, in which sounds travel with a haunting clarity.
It's worth experiencing--for a minute or two!
