Congratulations are in order for Lily Tomlin! The actress-comedian and her longtime partner, Jane Wagner, married on Tuesday, Dec. 31, after 42 years together, her rep confirms to Us Weekly.
The couple said "I do" in a private ceremony in L.A. on New Year's Eve. "They are very happy," her rep tells Us.
Chicago Tribune gossip columnist Liz Smith first reported the two had tied the knot in her column on Jan. 3. "It was an eventful New Year's Eve," she wrote. "My longtime friends, Lily Tomlin and her love, the writer Jane Wagner, got married on the eve of 2014 ... My wish is that their happiness will be as great as their combined talents."
Tomlin, 74, first met Wagner, 78, in 1971, when they collaborated on her comedy album "This Is a Recording." The album went on to win the Grammy Award for best comedy recording in 1972.

BTW, I have "This is a Recording" Hysterical! Lily, as Ernestine, calls, among others, Martha Mitchell, J Edgar (Jedgar, she calls him) Hoover, and Joan Crawford, as head of Pepsi, and wants the dime back she lost in a Pepsi machine!

(19,564 posts)We should all hope to find a love that enduring in our lives. I'm glad that after all that time they finally get to enjoy the legal status of being married which they should have had decades ago.

(19,564 posts)I don't know if you have someone you're in love with now or not, but I'm going to wish you all the blessings of true love. May you love deeply and fully and be loved the same in return. We all deserve that. We also all deserve the same legal recognition of our love as any other citizen in this country. Love is love. It's a beautiful and terrifying part of life that happens when you least expect it and happen to meet that special someone. Why some people refuse to get that is a mystery to me.

(12,151 posts)We just spent some time binge-watching West Wing over the holidays. I'd forgotten she was even on it. She's a comic genius and a good actor besides.
Good for her.

(959 posts)This couple has been together exactly the same amount of time as we; we just celebrated our 42nd anniversary. Lily and Jane are just now having the privilege of marriage. How beautiful that they wed, but how sad that it was not possible until now. We wish them much continued happiness.

Actually, - all jokes aside - I love LT, and I'm happy for her!!
On edit: Spell checker was OK with 'to', but it should have been 'too'. Dumb ass computer!

(12,448 posts)you tend to forget that the rest of the world doesn't get the same information you do. Lilly has been known to be out for decades, so it's good to remember that most of the world doesn't really have any idea what goes on there.
Edit: and 'fro'. C'mon, how many times does an American us the word fro? Can't it just flag fro by default on the assumption that you meant to write 'for'?

(9,966 posts)is from the town in TN where I lived for 35 years, and is the cousin of a friend of mine. She and Lily used to visit from time to time and it was always noted in the local paper. Jane was referred to as Lily's "writer" but everyone pretty much knew. Nobody made a big deal of it. One doesn't, in a small southern town.
