America didn't lose the war on poverty...

the GOP just stopped fighting it.

Worst of all, beginning with Ronald Reagan they shifted to a war on the poor and haven't looked back since.

Reagan democrats (today's tea party types) elected Reagan primarily as a protest against Johnson era social programs and the anti war movement
They never bought into the idea of a "Great Society"
