I know a lot of Utahns who were devastated that their marriage, or the marriage of family & friends, was now not recognized by the state. While this doesn't change that, at least this is a huge step for those couples to know the marriage they entered legally will be recognized by the United States government!

(9,476 posts)federal government overriding the wishes of the majority of Utah residents. blah blah blah state's rights blah blah. I thought to myself, if there is one state that should NEVER be given the right to define marriage it's Utah. You shouldn't even be allowed to comment on marriage. I wonder how many of them argue the "traditional marriage" b.s. ya know, conveniently forgetting their history where "traditional marriage" was one man and several women, a couple of whom were likely under 16. And no mention of the fact that the federal government wasn't deciding marriage, only deciding what the federal government would recognize. They can stay one hundred years behind if they wish, the federal government is moving ahead without them. Ditto the majority of the educated world.
