NIXON & CHRISTIE --->

NIXON & CHRISTIE

Nixon: "Let me make one thing perfectly clear ..." (his trademark phrase)

Christie: "And I'll say one last thing just so we're really clear ..."

Nixon: "I had no knowledge ..."

Christie: "I had no knowledge ..."

Nixon: "I am not a crook."

Christie: "I am not a bully."

How long will Christie let this drag on? It took Nixon two years.

9. Chris Christie's Bridgegate has a lot in common with Richard Nixon's Watergate

During a key speech in the midst of the Watergate scandal that brought him down, Richard Nixon famously remarked, "I am not a crook."

Last week another Republican with presidential ambitions uttered a similar line. "I am not a bully," said Gov. Chris Christie as the Bridgegate scandal was blowing up around him.

Will this scandal end up bringing him down as well? Probably not, but it’s sure making a dent in his chances of occupying the office Nixon once held.

---

The parallels are striking. One is the margin of the landslide victories in the elections at issue. Republican Nixon beat Democrat George McGovern by 23 points in that 1972 election. Republican Christie defeated Democrat Barbara Buono by 22 points in 2013.

---

In Watergate it was that secret White House taping system. In Bridgegate it was those e-mails from Wildstein subpoenaed by the Assembly Transportation Committee.

...between the men or between their deeds.

I don't understand the relentless attempt to equate what has been rightly called a sophomoric prank gone bad to one of the most important and revelatory episodes in modern USA history. Watergate exposed the essentially un-democratic culture of the Oval Office, the workings of election campaigns, the use of government agencies to target opponents of government policy and the clear revelation that this wasn't just a 'Nixon' problem.

He had to resign, not because he was 'a crook', but because through the tapes he exposed the culture. Nixon is gone but the culture lives on.

You can fire a President but you can't stop government officials from using their agencies for less than democratic purposes. Watergate marked the point in American history when transparency and a historical documentation of Oval Office conversation died. To those of us on 'high alert' because of the Kennedy assassination, Watergate brought the revelations of Deep Throat whose most important pronouncements, resonate today.

Because of Watergate, the machinations of your national elections were laid bare. McGovern was a viable candidate, even more-so when it came to the 'beleaguered' Nixon. Dirty tricks?? Or as my old Ed foundations prof would say, the powers that be arranged for McGovern's nomination, because even a hack like Nixon could be elected. They went on to emphasize their power when they got a witless movie actor elected.

Christie is more of the same....

Maybe because Christie is a likely candidate for PRESIDENT and his involvement in the bridge closures could be seen as a precursor to he kind of presidency he would conduct. (As in one marked by corruption, abuse of power, etc.)

13. Video Comparing Christie to Nixon

The Republican Governor made sure his scandal wouldn’t go away today by blaming his staff for the petty revenge bullying behind the deliberate closure of a lane on the bridge that ended up causing real harm to several people who needed medical care, tragically including a 91-year-old woman dying.

Christie is indeed showing D.C. how it’s done, Nixon style — in case anyone forgot.
