He showed the world the way both in words and actions.
Older I get the more I appreciate him

I'm old enough to remember the bathrooms for her, him and blacks, the water fountains labeled the same, the restaurant that wouldn't serve people of color, the gas stations that wouldn't sell gas to blacks. I remember

to wake me up.

Jacksonville Beach, Florida in 1957.

I'm ashamed to say that I was on that bus and did nothing but feel ashamed.

But, I was a Yankee just there for a few months. What I saw was blatant racism. The somewhat less subtle form became more apparent to me when I returned North.

on the pump telling the gentleman that he could go on about 10 miles west of where we were cause there's a bunch of you N's over there to wake me up. I then realize that the reason the mans wife and daughter were crying was because the bastard had refused to let them use the bathroom. I've never gotten over that, never will.

I was a kid of 14 at the time. (1962)
