Nadya Suleman, the California mother of 14 children known as Octomom, has been charged with welfare fraud for allegedly filing for public assistance payments while failing to report that she earned nearly $30,000 via public appearances and video residuals.
The 38-year-old Suleman has been named in a criminal complaint accusing her of one count of aid by misrepresentation and two counts of perjury by false application for aid.
According to Los Angeles prosecutors, Suleman illegally pocketed $16,481 in welfare benefits, including nearly $10,000 in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments.

(5,649 posts)So, this woman has 14 children - so household of 15 people. From the article, that part that hit me in the face:
Investigators allege that Suleman filed for public assistance last January and failed to disclose that she was also getting checks for personal appearances and residuals from videos. If convicted of the charges, Suleman could face nearly six months in prison.According to Los Angeles prosecutors, Suleman illegally pocketed $16,481 in welfare benefits, including nearly $10,000 in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments.
How the fuck do they think that 15 people are going to "make it rich" on $16,000 a year?????

(4,876 posts)for welfare. She left off the 30K from her yearly so she would qualify. The 30K is not all she made, just the money that would put her over the top for qualifying for welfare.

(5,649 posts)I realize that, FOR HER, she actually made more than $45,000.
BUT, most of the right wing idiots out there say that people (mostly women) get rich by living on welfare and having babies. That amount of money is what she collected while on welfare.
For the average person out there that is living JUST on welfare and food stamps, there is no way to get rich living off that pittance. The whole "welfare queen" myth came from those same sources that explain that people should not be allowed to get welfare because it encourages them to not get jobs and to 'get rich and drive Cadillacs" by collecting welfare and food stamps.
My point was that there is no way for anyone to live off of that, much less get rich.

(3,447 posts)...we learned from Dick Cheney -- the first man to inform me that I was, in fact, a lucky ducky with my staggering $12,000/yr income. I didn't have to know the -horrors- of losing 7% of my total income to taxes that I, as a lucky ducky, don't have to pay. I'll never know just how -hard- it is to have 2.2 million dollars left over after a veritable gutting at the hands of the evil tax man. Lucky me!
And not only that, but taking away the mother of these children for something that could be rectified with a friggin' FINE (if that) is unconscionable.

(4,876 posts)She gets no sympathy from me. There is a thing called birth control and if you have 6 kids and can't afford them, bringing another 8 into the world is irresponsible at best, In her case I believe she did it to be famous, not because she had some void that her original six kids couldn't fill.

(21,691 posts)I disagree with this woman's decisions probably more than you do, but her children shouldn't suffer because she's a moron. $46K doesn't go far for a family of four - for a family of 14 children, that's just barely scraping by.
Helping keep her kids fed and healthy is cheaper to us as a society.
REP
(21,691 posts)As much as I think she has made some terrible decisions, the welfare money plus the $30K won't go far in feeding, clothing and all the other things 14 children need. If she's using that money to provide care for her children, I have zero outrage. Her children don't need to suffer because she's a moron, and if public money is what it takes, so be it. Better than another fighter plane the military doesn't even want.

(15,682 posts)so I looked around a little and ran into this pic of Jonah, one of the octuplets, who was born with cleft lip. I read that Nadya waited longer than she should have, but the surgery went beautifully once finally performed.
Look at this beautiful little boy! Isn't he gorgeous (before and after)?

(89,249 posts)i feel the same way about anyone regardless of how much money they have.
unless they are adopting it just starts to seem selfish to me. and usually the older kids have to end up doing a lot of caring for the kids. more than the usual amount that older kids do in smaller families.
the duggars are another case where even after the mother had trouble with later pregnancies and the last baby born had serious health complications they are still talking about having more kids.
in her case it was strange. she almost seemed to have the mentality of a teenager wanting to have a lot of babies because they are cute when they are born. and not really fully getting that those babies grow up and they will be with you for at least the next 18 years. and that means not being able to do a lot of other things that young adults do as they get freedom .

(22,000 posts)about welfare. She and her doctor essentially conspired to make sure she'd have multiple children, despite she already had a few. Both acted unethically and yes one has to wonder about her state of mind. She became essentially a baby incubator by caring that many children at the same time.

(55,445 posts)of hitching a ride on that reality TV gravy train (I'm also betting one of the main reasons the doctor even went along is because he had some celebrity dreams, too)...How cynical, fame-hungry and outright insane does someone have to be to follow through on this??

(40,211 posts)She can go to Target or Bed Bath and Beyond and buy plastic sheets that are intended to be slept on. It is not healthy for the kids because that type of plastic doesn't "breathe," also it can rip and pose a suffocation hazard.
