Coburn announces resignation from Senate at end of year

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn confirmed late Thursday that he is resigning at the end of the current session in December.

Coburn, who is undergoing treatment for a reoccurrence of prostate cancer, said his decision is not related to his health.

"This decision isn’t about my health, my prognosis or even my hopes and desires," he said.

“As a citizen, I am now convinced that I can best serve my own children and grandchildren by shifting my focus elsewhere," he said. "In the meantime, I look forward to finishing this year strong."
