Antibiotic resistance: “In some parts of the world, already we have run out of antibiotics”

“In some parts of the world, already we have run out of antibiotics,” said Timothy Walsh, a professor of medical microbiology at Cardiff University.

“In places in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, possibly Russia, Southeast Asia, central South America, we are at the end game. There’s nothing left. And unfortunately there is nothing in the pipeline either.”

A number of years ago, my husband was put on intravenous antibiotics in the hospital, followed by several rounds of oral treatment at home (it was a serious staph infection). I remember reading "antibiotic of last resort" on the labels.

I didn't really know what it meant, but it sounded pretty sobering. Now, when I look up that drug (it was some form of vancomycin) it says some Gram-positive bacteria have become resistant to it. Well, what's the last resort now?

Try not to get an infection these days, because honestly, you don't know if the medication is going to work.

My great grandfather died of blood poisoning after a logging accident. My great grandmother and her children then moved to the US to be with her brother.
